The easy cardio busy guys skip

The most useful cardio for a busy guy is the one that feels almost too easy.

Zone 2. A pace where you can still hold a conversation but you would not want to sing.
At that pace you are building the engine that gives you all day energy, and you are teaching your body to burn fat for fuel. It barely touches your joints so you recover fast and can still lift properly that week.

Walk on an incline, easy bike, light jog. Thirty to forty minutes, a few times a week. That is really it.
You do not always need to go hard. Sometimes easy is the smartest thing you do.

The protein timing myth

You can stop rushing your protein shake.

The 30 minute anabolic window thing has been repeated for years and the research does not really back it up. You have hours, not minutes.
What actually matters is how much protein you get across the whole day. Not the stopwatch.

I see so many busy guys stressing about the small stuff while completely missing the big stuff. Get your daily total right and you are already ahead of most people.

Simple beats perfect. Especially when your schedule is chaos.

The number that predicts how long you will live
If I could only track one number for a guy over 40 it would be this one.

Your VO2 max. Basically how well your body uses oxygen when you are working.

There is research on over 750,000 people showing the fittest group had around an 80 percent lower risk of dying from any cause compared to the least fit. It beats smoking and blood pressure as a predictor.

And you do not build it by destroying yourself in the gym. You build it with easy steady cardio you can hold a conversation through. Two or three times a week.

Comment ENGINE and I will tell you where to start.

You are already losing muscle

Nobody really tells you this part.
From your 30s you start losing muscle every year. Somewhere around 3 to 8 percent per decade if you are not training. And strength goes about three times faster than size does.

That is why guys feel weaker long before they look any different. The engine fades before the paint does.

The good news is that it is almost all reversible. Your body is just waiting for the signal.

Every year you wait, the climb back gets a bit steeper. So start now while it is still easy.

Stop training for the mirror

The guys who stay in shape their whole life stopped training for the mirror a long time ago.
Chasing a look is fragile. You miss a few weeks, the look goes, and you quit.

But training for how you function, your energy, your strength, being capable when it matters, that is something you actually keep. And when the goal is being strong for your family and your work, motivation stops being the problem.

Funny thing is the body you wanted turns up anyway. It just arrives as a side effect.

Train for the man you want to be at 60 and the 40 year old version sorts itself out.

Cardio is not eating your muscle

If you skip cardio because you think it eats your muscle, someone sold you a lie.

A few sessions a week is not going to shrink you when your training and your protein are in place. What it will do is improve your heart, your recovery and how you feel every single day.

The strongest and healthiest guys I know past 40 do both. They lift and they do easy cardio. It was never one or the other.

Avoiding cardio to protect your muscle is a bit like skipping sleep to protect your energy. It backfires.

One to two lifts a week can add years

You do not need the gym every day. That belief is the reason a lot of guys never start at all.

Research links regular resistance training to something like a 20 to 40 percent lower risk of early death. That is not from living in the gym. That is a couple of focused sessions a week.

Strength is a buffer. It protects your bones, your joints and your independence later on.

The barrier is so much lower than you think. Consistency will beat volume every single time.

You do not need more time. You need a plan that fits the time you already have.

How much protein you actually need

The protein question I get more than any other, answered properly.

Aim for roughly 1.6 to 2.2 grams per kilogram of bodyweight per day.

Try to get 30 to 40 grams into each meal. As you get older that is around the amount that actually switches on muscle repair.

You do not need to weigh your food forever. Learn what that looks like on a plate a few times and then just repeat it.

And remember, protein on its own is half the job. Protein plus lifting is where it actually happens.

Save this one so you have it.
