Cecile Malterre: “Transferring A Happy Heart”

PNHOM PENH (Khmer Times) – Cecile Malterre has a mission in life: To transfer her happy heart to the younger generation and to help develop the country through education.

As the founder of Cambodia’s Children Growth Foundation (CGF), she believes education, especially for girls, plays an important role in developing the country.

“I think basic education for girls is important,” Ms. Malterre said. “To develop the country, we must have equity for all boys and girls to be educated by 2015.

“For me, Cambodia is taking off. We’ve pushed the elite to help the unfortunate ones and also pushed basic education for the younger generation.”

Mrs. Malterre, who was born in 1965 in Phnom Penh, was two years old when her parents fled to France.

During her time there, she was involved in a number of causes to help people deal with autism and Asperger’s Syndrome.
A founding member of France’s ‘Collective Autism’, she also spearheaded the ‘Together with Autism’ movement and participated in an ‘Autism Plan’ to bring publicity to the plight of people with autism.

She has had the chance to help people in England and many places in Africa. But after three decades away, she returned to Cambodia in 2000.

“Many Cambodians in France and other countries are afraid to come back here, because they do not know much about Cambodia,” she said.

“So I’ve told them about the country and encouraged them to come back to help in developing the country.” She had many reasons to return home, but her main draw was the strength of the Cambodian people.

“I think Cambodian people are not sad, because they always have a great smile,” she said. “But the smile is hiding their problem. They have their dignity and they smile because they don’t want to tell you their problem.”

More important than a foundation or cause is the message she wants to instill in young Cambodians.

“Cambodia needs to improve more on human rights and corruption reduction,” she said. “But what I want to transfer to the young generation is dignity. Don’t ask for money, but instead search for money from jobs.”

With two children and a French husband working as a pilot, Ms. Malterre flies back and forth every month to France. Over the years, she has made connections with many Cambodians abroad.

“I have wanted to help others since I was little, but didn’t have a clue on how to earn money,” Ms. Malterre said. “Now, because God has provided me a great family that has given me enough love and education, I want to transfer my happy heart to others.”

Mes 2 charmants volontaires et amis, actuellement en poste au Cambodge à mes côtés pour mon plus grand bonheur, Myriam alias Nikita Lmk, Leo Lgr et moi-même sommes allés visiter le Centre National de Réhabilitation de Kien Khleang cet après-midi à 15h, à deux pas du siège de CGF Foundation.

Nous avons été si gentiment reçus par Bruno de MarindeCarranrais, directeur en poste depuis peu de temps, représentant officiel du Ciomal Suisse et de l'ordre de Malte qui possède son pavillon en faveur des lépreux situé aux abords de la capitale de Phnom Penh.

Nous souhaiterions à cette occasion, s'il nous était permis, de prendre ce temps pour te remercier Bruno, de nous avoir consacré son précieux temps. Tu ne comptes pas tes heures d'engagement auprès de nos chers compatriotes, si démunis face à la lèpre. Maladie honteuse qui les rend ausi vulnérables que différents des autres, voire rejetés ou dans l'isolement le plus total.

L'ordre de Malte, par principe, a pour habitude de travailler dans l'ombre, en toute discrétion, en totale humilité. Sachez-le toutes et tous.

C'est donc avec ton autorisation Bruno que nous diffusons ce post.

Merci Bruno, merci à ton humble équipe internationale mais aussi à ton équipe khmère, elle est belle et travaille sans relâche, à soigner gratuitement les patients qui arrivent de toutes les provinces car Kien Khleang est le seul centre léprosique au Cambodge.

Vous êtes ces engagés de Paix que j'aime par dessus tout. Vous venez en aide au pays du sourire notamment mais aussi partout dans le monde, avec tant de cette exemplaire dévotion.

Bruno ta sensibilité si perceptible, cette gravité que j'ai pu ressentir aussi de toi, cet état de conscience omniprésente en toi, cette lourde responsabilité que tu endosses alors que tu pourrais simplement prétendre à un peu de repos bien mérité après une vie de travail avec ta chère épouse Dan de Marin ...
Tu me répondras que c'est un vrai choix de vie ... Je ne sais encore combien te remercier de ton engagement. Il me touche dans mes émotions, profondément.

Ton équipe, experte dans ce domaine si pointu et tellement particulier y assure un travail admirable qui mérite d'être mis en lumière. Vous recevez 20 patients le matin, 20 autres l'après-midi, une cadence très soutenue.

Cette jeune femme physiothérapiste cambodgienne que nous avons rencontré également, s'attache jour après jour, au traitement de la réadaptation des déficiences et incapacités touchant les systèmes neurologiques dont sont atteints les lépreux et qui les prive du sensoriel.
Elle leur réapprend la coordination, la sensibilité, la force, l'endurance . Une vraie vocation.
Elle est cambodgienne et dévouée. Elle est magnifique, elle aussi.

Il convient de le souligner au travers de nos rencontres de vie. Elle est admirable tout autant que ce médecin que nous avons également pu rencontrer. Je suis émue de tout ceci.

Vous vous déplacez dans les provinces aussi, pour preuve deux 4X4 bien nécessaires pour circuler dans les campagnes aux routes défoncées et, gagner le coeur des populations qui ne peuvent se déplacer vers vous. Un chauffeur et des personnes se déplacent pour détecter les villageois léprosiques. Il y a en a plus qu'on ne pense qui ne sont pas recencés. Il vous faudrait un logiciel que vous appelez communément dans votre jargin le "contact tracing" qui vous permettrait de les comptabiliser électroniquement. L'un de tes plus chers désirs.

Vous avez un service chirurgical où vous opérez couramment car parfois pour sauver des vies, vous êtes malheureusement menés à devoir sectionner des membres.

Bruno ton souhait serait de pouvoir agir préventivement, d'informer, de sensibiliser dans les demeures insalubres de campagnes retirées. La lèpre, si elle n'est prise en charge trop tardivement ... est curable.
Des tâches sur la peau peuvent être visibles chez certains ... Elle se transmet par la salive notamment.
Vous avez besoin de chaises roulantes.

Bruno fais nous une liste de tes besoins, si nous pouvons aider, nous mettrons tout en oeuvre pour cela.

My two lovely volunteers and friends, currently serving in Cambodia by my side for my greatest happiness, Myriam aka Nikita Lmk, Leo Lgr and I went to visit Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Center this afternoon at 15h, close to the CGF Foundation headquarters.

We have been so kindly received by Bruno de MarindeCarranrais, recently appointed director, official representative of Ciomal Switzerland and the Order of Malta, which has its leprosy pavilion on the outskirts of the capital of Phnom Penh.

We would like on this occasion, if we were allowed, to take this time to thank you Bruno, for giving us his precious time. You do not count your hours of engagement with our dear compatriots, so destitute in the face of leprosy. A shameful disease that makes them as vulnerable as any other, or even rejected or in total isolation.

The order of Malta, as a matter of principle, has the habit of working in the shadows, in all discretion, in total humility. Know him all.

This young Cambodian physiotherapist, whom we have also met, strives day after day to treat the rehabilitation of impairments and disabilities affecting the neurological systems that afflict lepers and deprive them of the sensory.
She teaches them coordination, sensitivity, strength, stamina. A true vocation.
She is Cambodian and dedicated. She is beautiful, too.
