Music travels. Culture evolves. Dance brings it all together.
Before Konpa found its way onto Kenya’s charts, it had already found a home on our dance floors.
For years, dancers within Kenya’s Kizomba and Afro-Latin communities were introducing Konpa alongside Salsa, Bachata and Kizomba, creating a space where people could connect with the music long before it became a mainstream sound.
Today, a new wave of Kenyan artists is embracing the unmistakable groove of Haitian Konpa and giving it a local identity. From smooth guitars and infectious basslines to Kiswahili, Sheng and contemporary Kenyan storytelling, these songs prove that music can honour its roots while growing into something uniquely its own.
This week’s playlist celebrates the artists shaping what we’re calling Kenyan Konpa, not as a replacement for Haitian Konpa, but as an appreciation of its influence and a celebration of how Kenyan musicians are interpreting the genre through their own creative lens.
