πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ Happy Madaraka Day, Kenya!

Today, we celebrate Madaraka Day - a defining moment in our nation's history when Kenya attained internal self-governance on 1st June 1963. It is a day that reminds us of the courage, sacrifice, and vision of those who laid the foundation for the Kenya we continue to build today.

At ZUIA Safety Solutions, we believe that true freedom and progress come with responsibility. As we honor our journey as a nation, we are reminded that creating safe schools, workplaces, institutions, and communities is a shared responsibility that safeguards the future generations of Kenya.

Just as our forefathers fought for self-governance, we must champion a culture of:
βœ… Safety Awareness
βœ… Risk Prevention
βœ… Emergency Preparedness
βœ… Responsible Leadership
βœ… Protection of People, Property, and the Environment

A safe nation is a productive nation. A prepared nation is a resilient nation.

As we celebrate this Madaraka Day, let us commit ourselves to building a Kenya where every learner, worker, and citizen can thrive in a safe and secure environment.

"Freedom thrives where safety prevails."

Happy Madaraka Day, Kenya! πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ

Today, Kenya mourns.

The heartbreaking loss of young lives in the Utumishi Girls Academy dormitory fire in Gilgil has left the nation in shock and grief. Our deepest condolences go to the families who have lost their daughters, to the injured students, and to the entire school community affected by this devastating tragedy. Reports indicate that at least 16 learners lost their lives while dozens more sustained injuries, with investigations ongoing into the cause of the fire.

As an Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) professional, I believe this is a moment not only for mourning but also for reflection and decisive action.

For far too long, school fires have continued to claim young lives in Kenya. Whether caused by accidents, infrastructure failures, or suspected acts of arson, every incident exposes critical gaps in our school safety systems. Recent survivor accounts have pointed to suspected arson and concerns regarding emergency evacuation challenges, matters that must be thoroughly investigated by the relevant authorities.

As a nation, we must move beyond reactive responses and strengthen a culture of prevention through:

βœ… Mandatory School Safety Audits and Risk Assessments

βœ… Functional Fire Detection and Alarm Systems in all boarding schools

βœ… Regular Fire Drills and Emergency Evacuation Exercises

βœ… Accessible and Unobstructed Emergency Exits

βœ… Student Mental Health and Behavioural Risk Intervention Programs

βœ… Comprehensive School Safety Committees involving students, teachers, parents, and emergency responders

βœ… Training of teachers, matrons, and student leaders in fire prevention and emergency response

βœ… Full implementation and enforcement of the School and Institutional Safety Management Framework.

The true measure of our response will not be in the statements we make today, but in the actions we take tomorrow.

Every child deserves to learn in an environment that is safe, secure, and prepared for emergencies.

May the souls of the departed students rest in eternal peace. May the injured recover fully. And may this tragedy become a turning point in strengthening school safety across Kenya. Ndungu Nyoro

Safety Tip | Fire Safety

A fire extinguisher on the wall does not mean your workplace is fire safe.

Here is what I find during fire safety audits in Nairobi:

❌ Extinguisher present - but wrong type for the fire risk in that area
❌ Pin intact, pressure gauge green - but last service was 3+ years ago
❌ Staff don't know how to use it (nobody has ever trained them)
❌ No designated assembly point
❌ Fire exits locked "for security reasons"

A locked fire exit has killed people. That is not an exaggeration.

Under OSHA 2007 and the Factories & Other Places of Work (Fire Risk) Rules, employers are legally required to ensure fire safety provisions are maintained and staff are trained.

The question is not whether you have equipment. The question is whether your people know what to do in the first 60 seconds of a fire.

ZUIA Safety Academy runs Fire Safety & Emergency Preparedness training (FSEP-K3) - 1 day, virtual or physical, for your entire team.

Someone collapsed at a workplace in Nairobi last month.

There were 23 people in the building.
Nobody knew what to do.

By the time the ambulance arrived, 14 minutes had passed. In a cardiac emergency, brain damage begins after 4 minutes without oxygen.

This is not a rare story. It happens in offices, factories, hotels, and construction sites across Kenya every week. And in most cases, the outcome could have been different if one person in that building had known basic emergency response.

OSHA 2007 requires every workplace to have trained first aiders. Most don't.
ZUIA Safety Academy is running the Occupational First Aid & Emergency Response course (OFAR-K3) β€” June 2, 3 & 4, 2026.
