Smallholder farmers are the backbone of agricultural production in many countries. News Flash: 78% of market vegetables in Kenya contain pesticide residues, with one-third exceeding international safety limits.

A new study by the Kenya Organic Agriculture Network, University of Nairobi, and SGS Kenya has raised serious concerns about the safety of our everyday vegetables. Samples of tomatoes, kale, spinach, and onions from major markets (Muthurwa, Githurai, Kangemi, and Nakuru) revealed widespread contamination.

Key findings:
-Tomatoes were the most affected crop, with some samples showing chemical levels up to 20 times the EU safety limit.
-Leafy greens like kale and spinach often contained cocktails of up to 7 different pesticides.
-Health risks include hormone disruption, neurological damage, reproductive issues, and increased cancer risk from long-term exposure.

While onions fared better, the overall picture highlights challenges in pesticide regulation, farmer training, and pre-harvest intervals.

This is a wake-up call for stronger regulation, better agricultural extension services, and greater support for agroecology and safer farming practices.
As consumers, farmers, and leaders in agribusiness, we all have a role to play in ensuring that the food on Kenyan tables is both abundant and safe.
