Valdas Dambrauskas was never a professional footballer. He didn’t even come close.

With what he won, he settled in London, went through the academies of Manchester United, Fulham and Brentford, and in 2007 made his coaching debut in England’s ninth tier.

Almost twenty years later, at 49, he is in charge of Azerbaijan’s Sabah FK, a club that didn’t even exist a decade ago but was about to experience its best days.

He led them to League and Cup titles, oversaw a historic comeback from 4-0 against the Danish side Aarhus, and on August 25 took them into the Champions League league phase for the first time.

Now they could face Real Madrid or Barcelona

At least 12 Kenyan Premier League clubs have told FKF President Hussein Mohammed that they will not honour the league’s scheduled Monday kick-off until a proper meeting is convened to address outstanding issues.

In a heated exchange minutes ago in a WhatsApp group created by the FKF President, the clubs argued that they cannot proceed with the new season without clarity on the rules applicable to the competition.

The clubs also raised concerns over the short notice given by the federation for the league to commence on Monday, insisting that there is a need for proper consultation before the season gets underway.

Among the clubs understood to be comfortable with a Monday kick-off are Mathare United, 3K FC and Migori Youth FC.
