2-3-5 ATTACKING FORMATION

During the pe*******on phase, 4-3-3 formation often transforms to 2-3-5 formation. Two defenders stay deep to recycle possession and protect against counter-attacks. The midfield three generally consists of a holding midfielder and the two inverted full-backs. The attacking five usually includes three forwards and two attacking midfielders. The idea behind having 5 attacking players is that they spread across all five vertical channels, which creates gaps between defensive lines and helps create positional overloads. The wingers stay wide to provide width, stretching the opposition's defence. The central striker could act as a target man or a false nine, dropping deep to create space for others. The two attacking midfielders operate in the half-spaces, and their advanced positions help to create overloads and exploit gaps in the opposition's defence.

1. OVERLOADING: This involves concentrating more players in a certain area of the field than the defence. By doing this, the attacking team can create a numerical advantage, leading to better control of that area and more passing options. This can force the defending team to shift more players towards the overload, which in turn creates spaces elsewhere.

2. ISOLATING: This is about creating a one-on-one situation, usually on the flanks or wide areas of the field. When a team successfully overloads one side of the pitch, it often leaves an attacking player with less defensive pressure on the opposite side. This player is 'isolated' against a single defender, which can be advantageous, especially if the attacker is skilled in one-on-one situations.

The effectiveness of combining these two principles lies in the unpredictability and flexibility it offers. The defending team is put in a dilemma: if they commit too many players to counter the overload, they risk leaving an attacker isolated on the far side. Conversely, if they don't address the overload, the attacking team can exploit their numerical advantage in that area.

Top-level teams use these principles effectively by reading the game and making rapid decisions. Players are trained to recognize when to exploit an overload with quick, short passes, and when to switch the play to an isolated player. The fluidity and dynamic nature of these tactics make them challenging to defend against, as the defending team must continuously adapt and make split-second decisions on whether to address the overload or prevent the switch of play to the isolated player.

1. Positional discipline as the default: The pitch is divided into zones to guide positioning and movement. As a reference, there should be a maximum of two players per vertical zone and three per horizontal line, with wide zones ideally occupied by only one player. This spacing maximises width and depth, stretches the opposition, creates gaps between lines, and generates frequent 1v1 situations. As the team advances, players shift into new zones accordingly.

2. Positional freedom with a purpose: This structure can be temporarily broken to secure possession, create triangles, form overloads, or attract opponents. A zone may be overloaded if it serves a clear objective, but once the objective is achieved, players must quickly reoccupy their reference zones to restore spacing.

3. Circulate the ball between zones: The ball should move from zone to zone rather than circulate within the same zone for too long. Overcrowded zones invite pressure and turnovers, so quick circulation is essential. Diagonal passes are preferred over straight vertical ones, especially between central and half-space zones. These rules apply until the final third, where players are given more freedom. However, progression should still come through clear advantages; speculative deep crosses and long balls that surrender control are discouraged.

By coming into central areas, inverted full-backs can help to create numerical superiority in midfield. This can help a team dominate possession, as they have more options for passes in central areas, making it more difficult for the opposition to press effectively. They can offer a short pass for centre-backs and midfielders, or they can make runs into forward areas themselves, providing an unexpected and difficult-to-track threat. With the full-backs moving inside, the opposition's wide defenders often get drawn into central areas, leaving space on the wings. This space can be exploited by wingers or attacking midfielders who move wide. Inverted full-backs can also offer more defensive solidity than traditional full-backs. By being positioned more centrally, they can help to prevent counter-attacks through the centre of the pitch if possession is lost.
