Few things beat backpacking into the wild and fishing on pristine water. Here are some trail-tested tips from David:

Pack light - one rig, one tippet spool (stick with mono) and a small selection of your go-to flies. (Tried and true around here: parachute adams, griffith's gnats, midges, and smaller pheasant tail nymphs.) A small Oros indicator usually makes the pack too.

Protect the rod. Secure it in a case, a cardboard tube, or a length of PVC pipe. It doesn't need to be pretty — it just needs to protect the rod. Trust us on this one.

Go compact. Our amazing Ansel (10.9 ft./15.8 in.) and MiniMax (11.7/10 in.) are built for exactly this kind of trip, as is the Nissin Pocket Mini V3 300 — a beautifully made Japanese rod we're proud to carry. If you need more reach for lakes, check out the Nissin 2 Way Yuyuzan 540 (17.4 ft., collapses to 20.8 in.).

After putting the Power Zoom 490 to work on larger fish on the Madison, we rigged a Daiwa PVC line and dry fly for a smaller-creek session and netted some beautiful rainbow trout.

While not as sensitive as an Ansel or MiniMax, we were quite pleased with the Power Zoom’s sensitivity and feel on smaller water. Its big-water backbone did not get in the way of a fun dry-fly session!

Tight lines!

Thanks for the great feedback Skiddy Fishing! “The Inyo from Keiryu Rod Co is not your everyday keiryu rod, nor is it your everyday tenkara rod! I find it to be a nice blend of the two giving fixed line enthusiasts a quality rod with superb backbone in cases where you need it. Anglers that appreciate fly and fish versatility would really like this rod and I think the Inyo is severely underrated in this quick growing tenkara world!”

Check out Jake’s beautiful rainbow using the Nissin Yuyuzan 620 rod! 🤩

Keiryu Rod Co. founder, David (not pictured), had a fantastic day on the Upper Madison with Jake Schilling Upper Madison Angler from Madison River Outfitters Madison River Outfitters!

The Nissin Yuyuzan 620 rod was a perfect match for the river, and the highlight came when Jake tried keiryu fishing for the first time. After only a few casts, he was making great drifts, and he quickly landed the rainbow.

David, on the other hand, had forgotten to bring his keiryu rigs 🤦‍♂️ so he got scrappy and ended up using a 13-foot section of Jake’s fly line as his main line. 😆 It worked surprisingly well!

Huge thanks to Jake for a great day on the water! 🙌

Another great review! Check it out: “The Keiryu Rod Co. Ansel Rod is of the same quality as the Daiwa Keiryu X 36 (which I also own), except Keiryu Rod Co. put a little more thought into their hardware. No cheap tip or butt caps - they’re metal. It handles a 15’ furled line, terminated with a 6’ tippet, and a #10 fly without any trouble. I highly recommend this rod!”⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Aaron H. via Website Review
