Cycling Frontier Hokkaido

A busy week or so for Cycling Frontier guides, with two small, private, week-long tours taking place simultaneously in central and eastern Hokkaido, as well as a one-day tour of Lake Shikotsu and Chitose for VIPs (including multinational CEOs and top politicians) from Taiwan. All the tours were punctuated with short, sharp showers but were mainly blessed by good weather on the whole. Still lots of cycling to be done here in Hokkaido this season, so why not come and join us in September or October?

As Honshu is pummeled with typhoons, torrential rain and heatwaves, we feel blessed here in Hokkaido to be able to enjoy the fine weather during this obon holiday week, together with guests from Switzerland, the United States and Tokyo.

Bit of a strange July this year with more cloudy and rainy days than usual, but Cycling Frontier guides have been out and about, with a week-long tour of northern and eastern Hokkaido, long-term rentals, and a few one-day tours, including this one with a family of four all the way from Switzerland. E-bikes and a trailer setup ensured that all the family could fully enjoy the challenging Niseko terrain. Here we are about to tackle the downhill section of the Panorama Line to the Hirafu ski resort.

Cycling Frontier this week hosted a short 3-day tour of the Sapporo environs, organised by Giant Adventure Travel. Despite the compact itinerary, participants were able to experience a wide range of rural scenery, state-of-the art urban facilities and, of course, delicious cuisine. The second half of last week's tour brought us to the Noboribetsu, Muroran and Lake Toya areas of southern, central Hokkaido, accompanied by blue skies and perfect temperatures for cycling. After a week-long adventure combining spectacular views, great food and soothing hot springs, we were sad to say goodbye to our new friends from Singapore. Hope to see you back in Hokkaido soon. Light rain failed to dampen the spirits of riders during the first couple of days of an 8-day tour of Central Hokkaido, which began in Asahikawa on the 7th. True to form, blue skies returned for the second half of the tour, evidence of which we will be posting soon!

Summer is here. Temperatures are in the high twenties but the breezes are cool, as we slip onto the big chainring for a fun-packed summer of adventure. Why not come and join us?

Over 40 riders took part in one of Cycling Frontier’s “Tour of Kamui” fun ride events, held in the town of Abira at the weekend. Located close to New Chitose Airport and with easy access to Sapporo, the Abira area — with its scenic rolling hills and quiet, traffic-free roads — should be part of your itinerary when planning a tour in Hokkaido.

The 2026 summer season got underway at the weekend, with a cherry blossom tour of southern Hokkaido, and the guests arrived in style!
The cycling part of the tour was pretty special, too, with full blooms and perfect weather!

Perfect snow cycling conditions for these guys from Kochi in the Shikoku region of Japan, who took part in one of our fat-biking & ice fishing tours on Saturday. (They also caught quite a lot of pond smelt. )👍
