The Commanding General’s Cup is always a special tournament because it’s a lot like the World Cup. For a short period of time, players leave their respective club teams and return to represent their own units, competing alongside the Marines they serve with before eventually going back to their clubs.
I’ve been fortunate to have a lot of success in this tournament over the years, but this year was special for a completely different reason. It wasn’t because I won—I didn’t. It was because four players from my club stepped up as player-coaches for their units and honestly outcoached me.
As a coach, that’s one of the greatest feelings you can have. Watching players grow into leaders who can organize, motivate, and lead their own teams is worth more than any trophy. Seeing them making decisions from the sidelines while still competing on the field made me incredibly proud.
That’s what coaching is really all about.
