We saw a roof and a foundation that needed fixing.

We kept that to ourselves. Those were our ideas, not theirs.

The family chose frogs.

And then bananas.

On their own.

This is what asking instead of telling actually looks like when the stakes are real.

Who knew frogs were the answer?

Part of my summer in Laos involved frogs. Let me explain.

A Bigger Table Asia gives cash grants to UXO survivors to make the changes they need in their own lives.

We visited a UXO survivor in rural Laos. The family chose frog farming as their path forward.

Forty-eight hours after we left, the frog pond was dug and the frogs seemed happy...for now!

Nobody had to follow up.

Nobody had to remind them. They knew what they needed.

They just needed the resources to do it.

Not plans. Not outsider ideas.

Cash, and a follow-up to see what happened.

More people messaged me privately after my recovery post than commented publicly.

"Me too." "I thought it was just me." "I didn't want to say anything."

A lot of people are holding it together while exhausted.

The smile is real. So is the exhaustion. Neither cancels the other out.

The smile doesn't tell you anything.

Someone can be in the middle of recovery, burnout, a hard season, and still be the person smiling in every photo.

I know because I was.

We don't post pictures of the bad days.

So if the only data point you have on someone is their feed, you're not looking at their life.

You're looking at the parts of it they let you see.

Ask anyway. "Wait, actually, how are you?"

That question is a gift.

You're allowed to say this:

"I respond to email between 8:30 and 6:30, Monday through Friday. If it's urgent, call me."

That's not refusing to work hard.

It's refusing to treat everything like an emergency, which is exactly the discipline a lot of operations have lost.

If you've been running in permanent crisis mode, this is where it starts to shift.
