HOKKAIDO TRAVEL Q&A
When Is the Best Time to Ski in Hokkaido?
Hokkaido’s ski season generally runs from late November to early April, with some resorts remaining open until May.
NOVEMBER TO EARLY DECEMBER
This is the beginning of the ski season, so snowfall can be less predictable. Some lower-altitude resorts may delay opening or adjust their operating areas if there is not enough snow.
If it is your first ski trip to Hokkaido and you are looking for more reliable snow conditions and a wider range of open slopes, we recommend visiting between mid-December and March.
FROM APRIL ONWARDS
Some ski resorts remain open during spring, although the number of available slopes gradually decreases. Beginner areas may also close earlier depending on snow conditions.
With warmer temperatures, spring snow is usually softer and wetter—a very different experience from Hokkaido’s famous winter powder. The slopes are often quieter, making spring a great option for beginners and anyone who prefers a more relaxed ski holiday while enjoying Hokkaido’s beautiful spring scenery.
Every month offers a different way to experience skiing in Hokkaido.
