At OKUNO in Nara, baskets brought from our 1basketry shop in Minami-Senju, Tokyo, now fill the space.

Thank you to everyone who has visited us since our opening day.

We have brought a wide selection of baskets, trays, and handcrafted pieces made from natural materials by makers from across Japan and around the world.

Their size, weight, texture, and even the scent of the natural materials are difficult to fully convey through photographs alone.

We invite you to pick them up, take your time, and explore the collection in person.

Our Nara pop-up continues through September 23.

If you are visiting Nara during Silver Week, we hope you will stop by.

We look forward to welcoming you with a space full of baskets.

Basket “Bouyricou” / Willow / France

This item has just been restocked.

The Bouyricou is a traditional willow basket from the Périgord region of southwestern France. It has long been used for harvesting and carrying produce in vineyards and orchards.

Its spiral weave begins at the center of the base, widening outward before gradually rising along the sides. The open weave and gentle curves give the basket a light appearance, while its structure remains firm and sturdy.

It can be used for shopping or outings, for gathering and storing fruit and vegetables, or for keeping everyday belongings together at home. In the makers’ own workshop, these baskets are also used in daily life to hold tools, jackets, and other things close at hand.

Harvest Basket “Paisuke”-Nemagari Bamboo / Nagano, Japan

Available once again.

This traditional basket, known as “Paisuke,” has long been made in Nagano Prefecture. It was originally used for farming, construction work, and all kinds of everyday labor. Lightweight, durable, and naturally resistant to heat, it is still used today in glass workshops and factories for carrying hot materials.

Rather than being finely finished, the basket is woven with practicality in mind. Thick strips of Nemagari bamboo create a bold, sturdy structure that reflects its history as a hardworking tool.

It is well suited for carrying freshly harvested vegetables, fruit, or gardening tools, and can be rinsed clean with water after use. As the bamboo gradually deepens in color over time, the basket develops a richer character through everyday use.

Sumo Salt Basket

This bamboo basket is traditionally used to hold the salt that sumo wrestlers scatter across the ring before each match.

Our baskets are made by the artisan who continues to produce salt baskets for professional sumo today. Built for use around the sumo ring, they are remarkably sturdy despite their compact size.

They work just as well in everyday life—for storing medicine, chargers, dried foods, root vegetables, or small household tools. Their durable construction makes them a practical storage basket for many different spaces.

Rooted in a long-standing tradition, this bamboo basket naturally finds its place in today’s home.
