Commonwealth Games update:

Tie break agony for Abbey and the men’s pairs finish on a high.

Starting the day yesterday, Abbey was up against current world pairs silver medalist Connie-Leigh Rixon of Malta. The first set was nip and tuck for the first few ends at 2-2 after 3 ends. The set got away from Abbey the next few ends with the first set going to Malta 7-3. The second set started the same way but with Abbey playing with much more confidence. After 5 ends at 3 a piece Abbey picked up 2 to lead 5-3 into the last end. Abbey managed to hold on and win her first set of the games 5-4 and take the match into a tie break. Abbey found herself a few shots down with last bowl in hand and looked to have drawn it, with a measure taking place, her bowl was just out with Malta picking up 2 and winning the match.

In the last session of the day Abbey competed in her final match against Daphne Arthur-Almond from The Falkland Islands. Abbey started well roaring into a 5-0 lead after 2 ends, but Daphne picked herself and came back to take the first set 10-6. The second set was much closer at 3-3 after 5 ends Abbey gave herself a chance of taking the match into a tie break but after dropping a 3 in the 6th end, a tough ask for a 4 on the last did not materialise with Abbey losing the second set and the match 6-5.

Malcom and Ross started the day relying on other results to go their way before they took to the rink for any slim chance of getting out the group. After results did not happen which they required they took to the rink without any pressure up against Nuie. They started well racing into a 5-0 lead after 2 ends. The 2 teams traded some shots the next few ends and the first set went to the Jersey duo 7-2. The second set was completely different with Nuie coming out the blocks quickest and ran into a 5-0 lead after 4 ends. The guys could not recover a 5 in the last end only picking up 1, losing the second set 5-1 and the match going into a tie break. The Jersey pair managed to hold out and win the tie break end and the match.

Malcolm and Ross took to the rink this morning early in their final game against a strong pair in decorated bowlers Daniel Salmon and Ross Owen playing for Wales. Both teams playing for pride, it was Malcolm and Ross who started the better racing into a 7-0 lead after 3 ends. The Welsh pair clawed a couple shots back but the set went to Jersey 7-2. The second set Malcolm and Ross would not relent, arguably playing their best bowls of the week racing into a 6-0 lead. The Welsh pair had no reply but managed to pick up a shot in the last end but Malcolm and Ross took the set 6-1 and the match comfortably. With that win they managed to finish third in their group.

With all matches completed the bowlers can now enjoy the last couple of days at the games. Well done to Abbey, Malcolm and Ross for their efforts this week, who played well and done themselves and Jersey proud.

A big shout out to team managers Ethel Southern and Alex Stewart who have been behind all 6 bowlers over the last 10 days.

Everyone can be pleased with their efforts over the last 10 days and take pride representing Jersey on one of the worlds biggest sporting stages.

Commonwealth Games update:

Men’s pairs up and running with a tie break win whilst Abbey continues her campaign.

Abbey started the day up yesterday against defending gold medalist Ellen Fife of Australia. The first few ends looked positive locked at 3 a piece but 3 difficult ends saw Abbey drop 9 shots before picking up a double to lose the first set 12-5. The second set did not start well for Abbey and she found herself 7-2 down after 5 ends. She picked up a double to give her a slim chance to win the set but Ellen proved too much and lost the second set 8-4.

Abbey came back on the green later in the evening against Emily Jim from the Cook Islands. A tough start in the opening set saw Abbey bring it back to 7-5 down going into the last end of the set giving her a chance but a double against her made the set go in favour to Emily 9-5. The second set proved much tougher and Abbey couldn’t force her way back into the set or the match eventually losing the set 7-2.

Between her games, Malcolm and Ross played their third group game against Malta. The first set proved tough with the Jersey duo finding it hard to get going, with Malta proving too strong and taking the first set 5-1. The second set seemed to have been going the same way. Trailing 3-1 going into the last end needing a 3, Ross holding 1 in the head, Malcolm used his calmness to draw another 2 to pick up the 3 needed to force a tie break. In the tie break, a bit of a lose end from both teams proved an opportunity for Jersey holding 1 going to the skips play. Malta could not nick the shot back and a tie break win for the Jersey duo.

Abbey finishes her campaign today against Malta at 11:20am and Falkland Islands at 8:40pm whilst Malcolm and Ross take to the green at 12:45pm against Nuie.

Commonwealth Games Update:

Abbey, Malcolm and Ross still searching for their first wins.

Abbey was first up yesterday playing against Canada’s Kelly McKerihen. It was a tough start for Abbey suddenly finding herself 11-0 down after 3 ends but once the nerves settled so did her game. She scored on the 4th end and in the 5th was holding a good 3 but with her last bowl she was slightly just over the pace and flicked it to Kelly’s bowl. The set finished 13-2. The second set started better for Abbey picking up a couple of shots first end but Kelly raced back to lead 7-3 after 5 ends. Abbey couldn’t get the score back and the second set and the match went to Kelly 10-4.

Malcolm and Ross kicked off the afternoon session against Malaysia. The lads started well picking up singles in the first 3 ends and a double on the 4th to lead 5-0 into the last. With Malaysia chasing the lads were able to stick in and pick up 3 to win the first set 8-0. The second set looked to have started the same way until Malcolm’s unfortunate final bowl of the first end gave Malaysia a chance to pick up a 4 which they managed and then followed up with a 2 second end to give them a 6 shot lead. The lads battled back into the set next couple ends but left themselves needing a 3 last end. They gave themselves a chance but ultimately just taking 1 shot losing the set 6-4 and heading to a tie break. The tie break was nervy and with 4 bowls left the lads were 2 down. Malcolm managed to get shot before the Malaysian skip drew the shot back. Malcolm tried to rest the bowl out with his last wood but was not able to and Malaysia take the tie break.

Abbey plays twice today, 9:55am against Australia and 7:15pm against The Cook Islands. Malcolm and Ross have 1 game at 11:20am against Malta.

Commonwealth Games Update:

Abbey, Malcolm and start their the Commonwealth Gamea campaign.

Yesterday Abbey started her campaign against 7 time world champion, Englands Katherine Rednall. Although picking up a 2 first end, Katherine then raced into a 6-2 lead. She was able to keep Abbey at bay and take the first set 8-3. The second set Abbey started the stronger, being 5-1 up after 3 ends. Katherine rallied back against Abbey talking the rest of the match and winning the set 10-5. Abbey will take a lot of positives from this game for today.

Malcolm and Ross started theirs up against old foes Guernsey. Just like Abbey they took the first end but the Guernsey duo grew into the set and took it comfortably 5-1. Malcom and Ross again took the first end in the second set looking to bounce back and force a tie break but again the Guernsey duo grew into the second set and took it 7-1 defeating the Jersey duo.

Abbey will be in action today at 11:20am against Canada and Malcolm and Ross will take to the Green at 3pm against Malaysia as they all look to bounce back after opening day defeats.

After winning Silver the other day, Jersey’s first medal at the Commonwealth Games since 1990, the teenage swimming prodigy has only won a gold medal for Jersey, what a race, what a talent.

This is why we celebrate sports, as an island, what a monumental achievement.

Commonwealth Games update:

Curtains close down for Taylor, Sara and Fiona as their campaigns finish at the Commonwealth Games.

Today was the final games for Taylor with 2 matches to play. He started up against local rivals Guernsey, represented by Jason Greenslade. The first set was a tough battle losing 5-4 on the last end of the set. The second set was another battle but Jason ran into a strong lead with Taylor unable to recover losing out the set 8-4.

Taylor was on again later in the day against Australia’s Aaron Wilson who had a 100% record and already qualified for the semi finals. The first set was close and Taylor gave himself a chance to draw the first set, at 6-5 down he drew the shot to hold 1. Aaron fired taking the bowl and Jack out and holding 3 with back bowls taking the set 8-5. The second set was more or less the same. With 2 ends left Taylor was trailing by 2 shots. Fine drawing skills saw Taylor take 3 shots, to lead the last end 5-4. Unfortunately the last end Taylor just could not find the pace and Aaron was able to draw 3 shots to take the set 7-5 and the match.

Taylor can hold his head up high in his first Commonwealth games and will take back lots of experience.

Between Taylor’s games, Sara and Fiona finished up their campaign against The Falkland Islands. They raced into a 5-0 lead first set and then withstood a fight back to take the set 5-3. The second set was more comprehensible with Sara and Fiona showcasing their talent to comfortably take the set 12-0 and the match.

The ladies finish with 3 wins from 5 finishing joint second on points but 4th overall on shot difference. The ladies should feel proud of their hard work and effort.

A massive congratulations to Taylor, Sara and Fiona on their play this week.

Tomorrow sees campaigns start Malcolm De Sousa and Ross Davis in the men’s pairs and Abbey Andrieux in the ladies singles. Malcolm and Ross will take on Guernsey and Abbey takes on England at 4:25pm.

Super Sunday for Jersey!!

Starting the day at the Commonwealth Games, Taylor Greechan played mid morning. He stormed the first set, setting himself for the win. Unfortunately, the second set was not his suffering a loss to force yet into another tie break. The tie break did not go his way and a loss ended up on the card. With 2 games left, Taylor will play with pride tomorrow against local rivals Guernsey against decorated bowler Jason Greenslade and against Australian legend Aaron Wilson.

In the ladies pairs, Fiona and Sara were up against the Cook Islands, looking to bounce back from back to back defeats. The ladies played brilliantly and won the game by 2 sets to 0. They will finish their campaign against the Faulkand Islands tomorrow.

Back home, the Men’s Le Quesne was all to play for. Despite the misty drizzle, the lads drilled in, with hunger to win the trophy. Scott Ruderham and Co put the first points on the board for the day with a comfortable win.

Michael Rive and Co despite dropping a 5 first end, came back and got a strong lead after picking up a 6. The Guernsey 4 fought back but the Jersey lads held on to confirm the trophy was coming home.

Finally, Luke Le Sueur and Co wanting to make it a final session sweep raced into an early lead, but the Guernsey 4 skipped by Matt Le Ber brought it back and took the lead at the halfway stage. Some big bowls by the Jersey 4, kept it close and then raced into a 9 shot lead with 2 ends left. They kept Matt and his team and bay to make it 3 wins for 3.
