For most of the history of sports science, the female athlete did not exist. Not in the research.

The majority of endurance studies were conducted on male subjects. The findings were then applied to female athletes as though physiology were universal. As though hormones did not influence substrate utilisation. As though the menstrual cycle did not affect recovery. As though the health risks of chronic under-fuelling were simply not there.
