VEHICLE SELF-DEFENCE WORKSHOP
DOMINO'S CAB DRIVERS

I have been asked regularly to help our Jersey taxi & cab driving community with specific self-defence training that they can use to keep them safe at work. Like alot of service areas they have seen an increase in disrespectful and aggressive behaviour these past few years.

The parameters were for it to...
1. Practical
2. Easily applicable
3. Within the Health & Safety/ Criminal Law framework

All achieved and explained 👌

The workshop looked at:

- inside/ outside the vehicle
- scale of force
- legal framework
- preemptive action
- getting out of vehicle correctly
- defending punches & grab
- choke & headlock releases
- sharp objects (knife) threats
- troubleshooting

Everyone has a right to go to work and feel safe at all times. Self-defence workshops give people the knowledge and tools how to feel this way and take action if needed.

MULTIPLE THREAT
SCENARIO TRAINING

If cornered or being maneuvered by 2 or more 'threats' it may be necessary to pre-emptively strike and breakaway.

Distance between the threats is going to decide your plan of pre-emptive striking.

For example, if they are close to you may decide to breakout with a Forward Arrow. A longer range may dictate a groin kick being the first strike.

Here the range is somewhere in between. Perfect for a horizontal forearm smash across the nose. The key to this method is to bounce off the first strike straight into the second.

Forearm Smash ----> Big straight cross
Forearm Smash ----> Side hammerfist

I prefer the big cross, using the same arm as used for the forearm.

Acting preemptively can be the key to avoiding a much worse situation. It is on your terms and is legal in correct circumstances.

Like anything in self-defence you MUST train these different scenarios and prepare the brain to respond the way you want it to go in a real situation.

SIDE HEADLOCK
RELEASE FROM THE FLOOR

In the grapple, its easy to get taken to the ground. This applies to a standing side headlock whether it's intentional or not.

As falling if possible maneuver yourself to a side position to immediately attack the head before the aggressor has a chance to lock down strongly.

There are a number of release options depending on how early/ late the escape is attempted but if your hands are free and aggressor's head is in a good place, the head to knee release is a solid option. Make sure to control/ strike the aggressor's head to stop them getting up and continuing the assault.

SIDE HEADLOCK
BASIC RELEASE

Side Headlock can be applied from a number of different positions (behind, grapple, front etc). Regardless the principle is the same...head caught with the arm, pulled into the body, significant pressure/ damage applied to the neck.

In the basic release I.e. caught but not yet pulled deep or to the floor, follow the basic rules.

- turn head into aggressor's arm pit
- simultaneously attack groin and swim arm to grab the head under the nose
- pull head back, straight spine & attack the head
- separate or control or continue combatives (whichever is most applicable to the circumstance)

'BASEBALL SWING'
HORIZONTAL STICK ATTACK

Horizontal swing is the most powerful swing. Fortunately its the easiest to see and judge time & distance.

There are two easy principles for sticks...you are either inside or outside 😄

If you dont have room to maneuver or an object you could use to defend yourself (e.g. chair), then your best choice is moving in fast & strong.

Burst inside the swing arc, if your hands are up, its possible to use the double forearm defence. Intercept the weapon perpendicular to the swing.

There are variations on the initial counter strike and disarms but the most important thing is getting control of the weapon & the aggressor's arm to deny another attack.
