A question I get quite often from my 1:1 students is, “are there any books you’d recommend to help me go deeper into my yoga practice?”
One helps you understand the bigger picture, the other gives you more tools to explore it through your body.
Both are books I keep coming back to and these are two I’d always recommend 🙏
At it’s core, The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali gives us a simple practical pathway through yoga, from the root of the practice through to its destination.
If you want to go deeper into the Sutras, Edwin Bryant’s translation and the Vyasa commentaries are great resources for understanding the traditional context and meaning behind the text.
For me, it simplifies things and gives a bit more clarity around why we practise.
And then there’s Light on Yoga by B.K.S. Iyengar which is more practical, with loads of guidance around alignment, techniques and the asanas, alongside the wisdom of a teacher who maintained an incredible physical practice well into his later years.
If you enjoy this, I’d also recommend ‘Light on Life’, which delves a little deeper into the philosophy and explores how yoga can become a way of life.
