The FIA has concluded a constructive WRC candidate event at Rally di Roma Capitale, assessing the event’s preparedness for a potential step up to the WRC - FIA World Rally Championship 🇮🇹
With the candidate event concluded, attention now turns to the FIA’s post-event reporting process.

The on-site evaluation of the event's WRC candidacy was successfully completed during the 2026 edition. The FIA will now finalize the reports that will support the next stages of the evaluation process.

Rome, July 10, 2026 – Rally di Roma Capitale has announced that the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) has completed the on-site evaluation of the event's bid for possible inclusion in the FIA World Rally Championship.

The assessment took place from July 3 to 5 during the 2026 Rally di Roma Capitale, a round of the FIA European Rally Championship (ERC). Throughout the three-day event, FIA delegates evaluated the sporting, safety, and operational aspects of the rally, working closely with the organizers and the authorities involved in staging the event. At the same time, representatives from WRC Promoter reviewed the rally's promotional activities, fan engagement, and commercial potential.

With the evaluation phase now complete, the FIA will finalize the reports prepared by its delegates. The findings will be shared in the coming weeks and will help determine whether Rally di Roma Capitale is suitable to be considered by WRC Promoter for possible future inclusion in the FIA World Rally Championship calendar.

FIA President H.E. Mohammed Ben Sulayem said:

"The completion of the Rally di Roma Capitale candidate evaluation marks an important milestone in the journey toward bringing the FIA World Rally Championship to a prestigious new location in the heart of Rome. This is another exciting moment for rally fans and reflects the Championship's continued growth in 2026, following evaluations of new candidate events in the United States, the United Kingdom, and now the historic Italian capital.

Rallying is enjoying strong global momentum, both in emerging markets and in countries with a rich motorsport heritage, reaffirming our commitment to bringing the Championship to new audiences around the world. I would like to thank our Member Club, the Automobile Club d'Italia, WRC Promoter, the event organizers, and everyone who has contributed to supporting this process. With the evaluation phase now complete, our focus turns to finalizing the reports and sharing the findings with the organizers."

ACI President Geronimo La Russa said:

"Rally di Roma Capitale has become one of the most important international motorsport events in Italy and, this year, once again demonstrated the strength of the project developed under the leadership of the Automobile Club d'Italia together with the organizers, local institutions, volunteers, and everyone involved in delivering the event.

The 2026 edition showcased the ambition of Rally di Roma Capitale, featuring a renewed sporting route, a solid operational base at EUR, and a spectacular itinerary that took the rally through some of Rome's most iconic locations.

For ACI, it is a great source of pride to support an Italian event whose organization, prestige, and long-term vision make it worthy of consideration for the FIA World Rally Championship. We thank the FIA and WRC Promoter for their work during the candidate event and look forward to continuing to support the evaluation process as Rally di Roma Capitale continues its path of growth."

The Italian rally team claimed victory over France in the first-ever National Match held during the XIV Rally di Roma Capitale, winning by 41 points to 24.

The National Match Rally, created through the partnership between the Automobile Club d'Italia (ACI) and the Fédération Française du Sport Automobile (FFSA), concluded with Team Italy securing the inaugural title in the Eternal City.

The standout performer of the weekend was Roberto Daprà, co-driven by Luca Guglielmetti, who claimed the overall victory in the Rally di Roma Capitale and earned 10 points for Team Italy. The Rally2 category also played a decisive role in the Italian success, with Giandomenico Basso and Lorenzo Granai adding 8 points, while Andrea Mabellini and Virginia Lenzi contributed 5 points, helping the Azzurri build a commanding lead over the event's 11 special stages.

The French Rally2 crews fought hard throughout the rally. Pablo Sarrazin and Yannick Roche, who finished seventh overall, collected 6 points, while Elliot Delecour and Fabrice Gordon scored 4 points, and Tristan Charpentier with Florian Barral added 3 points.

No points were awarded to Andrea Crugnola and Luca Beltrame, who finished 78th overall after Saturday's off-road incident cost them nearly one hour and thirty minutes, nor to Arthur Pelamourges and Bastien Pouget, who retired on Special Stage 10.

Italy also dominated the Rally4 category. Gabriel Di Pietro with Andrea Dresti and Davide Pesavento with Alessio Angeli finished first and second overall among the Two-Wheel Drive competitors, earning 10 and 8 points respectively. France collected only 6 points through Alexandre Villiod and Loris Pascaud, while Arthur Roché and Quentin Proust added 5 points.

Before the start of the rally, Geronimo La Russa, President of the Automobile Club d'Italia, and Pierre Ragues, President of the FFSA, greeted the drivers from both national teams, emphasizing that this inaugural edition represented an important milestone in cooperation between the two federations. Their handshake and embrace on the ceremonial start podium beneath the Colosseum symbolized the spirit behind the National Match Rally—a competition founded on friendship, mutual respect, and sportsmanship, values that will continue to define future editions of this international contest.

With its 41–24 victory, Italy becomes the first nation to enter the National Match Rally record books, launching a new tradition jointly promoted by ACI and FFSA, with the ambition of continuing the Italy–France challenge at future international rally events.

Roberto Daprà maintained his overnight advantage to land his maiden FIA European Rally Championship victory with a standout first-place finish on Rally di Roma Capitale on Sunday.
Leading by 20.2sec heading into Sunday’s deciding four stages, Daprà moved further out of the reach of his rivals by winning the day’s opening test for an extended lead of 25.0sec.

With his first ERC triumph all but assured, Delta Rally-run Daprà adopted a more conservative approach for the deciding three stages, which he completed with an overall margin of 13.8sec.
In the process the 25-year-old Italian, who was co-driven by compatriot Luca Guglielmetti, became the eighth Junior ERC graduate to win an ERC event outright to further underline the importance of the young driver series in developing the next generation of talent.

“Crazy, crazy, we are very happy,” said the Pirelli-equipped Škoda Fabia RS Rally2 Daprà. “It was demanding today, very, very stressful. But we managed to win. And after last week in [EKO Acropolis Rally] Greece, I think that we deserve this big emotion, and I am very, very happy.”

By finishing second – albeit by 0.5sec – in another Pirelli-supplied Fabia, Teemu Suninen moved to the top of the provisional standings by four points after three rounds with Boštjan Avbelj beating double European champion Giandomenico Basso to the final podium spot by 3.2sec.

Basso demoted Avbelj for third when his Italian-domiciled Slovenian rival spun on SS8. But Avbelj hit back to reclaim the position on the penultimate stage and almost denied Suninen second place by winning the Power Stage.

After Saturday’s action focused on untried mountainous stages northeast of Rome, Sunday’s route to the east of the city visited smoother – and cleaner – roads in more familiar territory. However, the intense heat remained a notable challenge for the ERC stars and their cars.

Hyundai-powered Arthur Pelamourgues was on course to finish fifth on his ERC debut following a fine drive. But the Michelin-equipped French rising star crashed on SS10, which left Yoann Bonato to complete the top five as the leading Lancia Ypsilon Rally2 HF Integrale runner.

Despite completing Friday night’s Colosseum super special in 24th place among the ERC contenders, former Junior ERC champion Mille Johansson battled back to finish sixth with Pablo Sarrazin and Andrea Mabellini seventh and eighth respectively.
Hankook-suppled Yohan Rossel and defending ERC champion Miko Marczyk rounded out the top 10.

The FIA European Rally Championship’s Tarmac tour continues in the Polish city of Katowice and surrounding countryside of the Silesia region later this month with the 82nd running of Rally Poland from 24 - 26 July.
