On July 18, 1898, Marie and Pierre Curie announced their discovery of polonium to the French Academy of Sciences. Marie had been digging into a strange puzzle: pitchblende, a dark uranium ore, was far more radioactive than the amount of uranium in it could explain. Something else had to be hiding inside, something no one had ever identified.
She was right. Through endless chemical separations, tracking the radioactivity like a trail of breadcrumbs, she isolated a substance roughly 400 times more radioactive than uranium.
She could have named it anything. She chose polonium, after Poland, her homeland. In 1898 Poland had been wiped off the map for over a century, carved up between Russia, Prussia, and Austria. Naming an element after an occupied nation was a deliberate political statement, tucked into the language of chemistry.
Polonium was just the beginning. Five months later, the Curies announced a second element, radium. The paper announcing polonium was also the first time the word "radioactivity" ever appeared in print.

🪐 Some planets may be forcing their stars to stay young.
The planets are hot Jupiters, giant worlds that orbit extremely close to their stars, sometimes nearer than Mercury is to the Sun.
In a new study, astronomers looked at wide binary systems, where two stars were born together but only one hosts a hot Jupiter. That setup is powerful because the second star acts like a cosmic control sample. Both stars are the same age, but only one is being tugged by a nearby giant planet.
Using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and ESA’s XMM-Newton, the team measured how active the stars were in X-rays.
The result was clear. Stars with hot Jupiters were brighter in X-rays and more magnetically active than their planet-free stellar twins.
The likely reason is tides. A close giant planet can pull on its star, making the star rotate faster than it normally would at its age. Faster rotation keeps the star magnetically active, which is usually a sign of youth.
So the planet is not stopping time.
It is making an old star behave like a younger one.
