Let's forget Silfra for a moment. Ten minutes down the road, inside the same Þingvellir rift system, sits a fissure most visitors never hear about: Davíðsgjá.
It's usually a few degrees warmer than Silfra, and it runs long, deep, and narrow, dropping to 21 meters. The top of the fissure sits about 7 meters underwater, open enough to Þingvallavatn lake that trout often swim through alongside divers. Visibility shifts with the weather rather than staying glass-clear year-round, which is why we call it Silfra's wilder, darker sibling.
This one's a dry-suit dive-only, no snorkeling here, just certified divers and a quieter side of Þingvellir most people never see.
If you're certified and want to go beyond the postcard shot, ask us about diving both fissures in one day.

From “Absolutely Not” to “When Can We Go Again?”
One of our guests came to Iceland dead set against getting into 35°F glacier water. "I'm from Florida, I don't do the cold". Her husband talked her into Silfra anyway. She went in expecting to survive it.
She came out calling it one of her favorite experiences of the entire trip.
"I was terrified to get in! The second my face hit the water, every ounce of fear disappeared. Floating between two continents in the clearest water on Earth is one of the coolest things I've ever done. And yes, we'd book with Dive.IS again in a heartbeat." Swipe for her full review.
That's the thing about Silfra. You don't need tropical fish or coral to be completely floored by it. You just need the clearest water on the planet and two tectonic plates to float between.
This isn't us saying it. It's her review, word for word, right down to "don't leave without buying the t-shirt."

Snorkelling between continents in Iceland is a truly unique experience, but snorkelling Silfra under the midnight sun is even more unique.
That's what our private 8 PM Silfra tour offers: golden evening light, glass-clear water, and a stillness you won't find earlier in the day. Iceland's famous "midnight sun" season means daylight lasts well into the night, so you can float between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates while the sky stays lit like late afternoon.
It's one of the few times of year this dive site feels almost otherworldly. And with an evening start, it's the perfect way to close out a full day of adventure without missing a moment, and without the crowds.

Some places are hard to explain. They need to be experienced.
Our guide captured a beautiful dive in Silfra this weekend. "Silfra is such a unique dive. Even without shipwrecks or marine life, you still look in awe at its beauty."
Just two continents, crystal-clear glacial water, and 100 metres of visibility in every direction - that is the surreal beauty. But you could see the unique Arctic char gliding through the fissure. Birds overhead as you surface. And in summer, the lava floor comes alive with troll hair algae in shades of green you won't find anywhere else on Earth.
That is Silfra.
Come see what she means. 🔗 Link in bio.

Every year, we bring together guides from every tour operator at Silfra, alongside the Thingvellir park rangers and Iceland's paramedic professionals, to train together, share knowledge, and ensure everyone working at the fissure operates to the same high standard of safety.
The day covered everything from CPR, oxygen administration and AED use, to towing tired snorkelers, emergency exits along the fissure, and full search, recovery and rescue of an unconscious diver.
As Iceland's only PADI 5 Star IDC Development Dive Center — and the only operator certified by the Icelandic Maritime Administration for both diving and snorkelling at Silfra — DIVE.IS helped develop many of the country's safety rules, including the guide ratios that later became Icelandic law. Hosting this workshop every year is a natural extension of that role.
And as always, the day ended with the DIVE.IS way: a BBQ at the park.

This is our home, and it is magnificent! Silfra is a fissure between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, one of the rarest geological encounters on earth. A place where the ground beneath you is still moving, the water has been travelling for a century, and the silence underwater is unlike anything above it. Glacier-filtered water. 100m visibility. 2–4°C, year-round.
Four sections, each one different, discover the Big Crack, the Hall, the Cathedral, and the Lagoon.
Save this and swipe through before your Iceland trip.
Guided snorkeling and diving tours in Silfra are available year-round.
*No diving experience needed to snorkel it.
*Diving tours, on the other hand, are ideal for certified dry-suit divers seeking a calm, cold-water dive with minimal currents and unparalleled visibility.
