The Final 1% - Part 1: When avoidance and de-escalation fail, you're left with the final 1% - the moment a real threat closes in and words stop working. This window is dangerous partly because sparring instincts can betray you: ring habits like measured exchanges and pulled shots are built for a scored contest, not a survival situation with no rules and no time. The moment demands a total mental shift - you're no longer competing, you're neutralizing a threat and creating an escape. That means full commitment from the first move: strikes aimed at the eyes, throat, groin, or knees rather than "sport legal" targets, any object in reach used as a weapon, and grappling treated only as a brief tool to create an opening - never a position to hold on the ground. In this window, hesitation is the real danger; damage and disengagement matter far more than technique.
