Translated literally, Krav Maga means ‘contact combat’(in Hebrew). Krav Maga is the Israeli system of self-defence. Originally developed to help Jews combat anti-semitic violence and aggression in Europe, Krav Maga became the official hand-to-hand combat system of the Israel Defense Forces after the State of Israel was formed in 1948. Subsequently, civilian modules of Krav Maga were developed for the safety of the general public

WHO CREATED KRAV MAGA? Krav Maga was developed by Hungary-born Emrich ‘Imi’ Lichtenfeld (also known as Imi Sde-Or) who grew up in Bratislava Slovakia in the 1930’s where he became a successful wrestler, boxer and gymnast. He used his fighting skills to develop the Krav Maga system to fight anti-semitic violence in his town. His success in training others to use the system led him to become the chief instructor for training the Israeli Defence Forces in hand-to-hand combat after the State of Israel was formed in 1948. WHAT ARE THE PECULIARITIES OF KRAV MAGA? Krav Maga trains your natural reflexes to get you out of harm’s way, and to take down the attacker with a barrage of counter-measures leaving him no opportunity to continue the attack. It equips you to respond with incapacitating strikes using the strongest parts of your body against the most vulnerable parts of the attacker’s body. Unlike conventional martial arts and fighting styles, Krav Maga wasn't developed for tournaments or competitive bouts, but for street survival. The only goal of Krav Maga is to make you neutralise the threat as quickly as possible, and get you home safe. Every Krav Maga practitioner trains to fight off attacks by a stronger attacker, and to deal with multiple-attacker scenarios. Because on the street there are no rules, and no referee to stop the fight. WHAT IS A TYPICAL KRAV MAGA SESSION LIKE? In Krav Maga training, one has to build one’s fitness to fight from the inside out. The sessions therefore start with physical training (largely calisthenic) that is designed to build endurance and to condition your body and mind to withstand the rigours of a street situation. Following the workout, the trainees practice certain drills like the ‘360 defence’ that are designed to increase awareness, reduce response time, and build muscle memory. Lastly, trainees are shown specific threats that may face on the street, and are taught how to overcome them. All in all, it is a great skill-set to acquire, and one hell of a workout!
