We often think good communicators are the ones with the best answers. But in reality the most effective communicators are the ones who know what to ask.

A good question can slow down a rushed conversation, uncover what someone really means, challenge an assumption, bring clarity to a problem or make someone think differently.

What questions do you generally ask when you meet someone?

Next time you’re in a meeting, answering a difficult question, or making an important point….

don’t rush to fill the silence.

Let your words land.

Make the pause part of your message.

We call it overthinking when you’re thinking about something again and again, beyond the point where you normally would.

But think about it

How will you prepare better, find solutions, anticipate possibilities or communicate more clearly if you don’t think things through?

The problem isn’t necessarily thinking more.

The problem begins when your thinking becomes unhelpful….when it keeps you stuck instead of helping you move forward.

And here’s something I want you to think about:

If you can repeatedly imagine the worst-case scenario, you can also train yourself to think about the best-case scenario.

Nobody really teaches us that.

We’re so quick to tell ourselves “Don’t overthink.”

But perhaps the better question is:

“What am I training my mind to think about repeatedly?”

Because you may not need to stop thinking.

You may need to learn how to direct your thinking.

We spend so much time learning how to speak better that we sometimes forget that communication is a two-way process.

Listening isn’t just staying quiet while the other person speaks.

It’s being present enough to understand their words, emotions, intention and perspective.

And when someone feels genuinely heard, something changes in the conversation.

Rapport becomes easier. Connection becomes deeper. Trust starts to build.

So the next time you’re having an important conversation, don’t just listen for your turn to speak.
Listen to understand.
