"The mountains are calling, and we must go." Canning Mountaineering Club (CMC) was founded in the year 1996. among the youths of West Bengal and adjacent states.

We are a passionate collective of climbers, hikers, trainers and high-altitude adventurers dedicated to scaling summits and exploring the great outdoors. Since then it is working to promote adventure sports like trekking, rock climbing, mountaineering etc. By these, we try to impart into them the qualities like leadership, team spirit and self-con

fidence. Starting with 12, the number of the members has grown into 55, all of whom are well-trained in different mountain related disciplines. Throughout the year, we arrange classes on mountains and environment; starting from basic geography and geology to the recent threat of global warming and glacier melting. The club takes part in various exhibitions in schools and colleges to motivate the youth to actively participate in our programmes and to protect the environment. CMC also organizes some Nature Study camps at the outskirts of Kolkata to familiarize its members to the surrounding eco-system. Since the first year, our club is organizing Rock Climbing Courses (Basic, Intermediate and Advance) in the hills of Bankura, Purulia and even Orissa. Over the past few years, the number of trainees has increased from 18 to 65. The age of the trainees varies from 12 to 35 years and they represent different parts of our state and different socio-economical background. Simultaneously, for trainees aged 4 to 12, we conduct a Nature Study camp. This year CMC had organized a Summer Camp in the hills of Sikkim with the motto of “Save The Environment”. We also carried out three medical camps to help the victims of the cyclone “Aila” in the Sunderbans. Apart from these, every year we organize High Altitude Trekking Programmes in different parts of the Himalayas, the last being Kharapatthar Expedition in the Gangotri region in October ’08. In the past few years, we had organized two expeditions. The first was Mt. Chamser Kangri in Ladakh and the other was Mt. Yunam in Himachal Pradesh. Our members’ sumitted both peaks to make us proud.

With heavy hearts, we share the heartbreaking news that Elite Exped has confirmed the passing of Nirmal "Nimsdai" Purja following the devastating avalanche on Broad Peak.

𝐍𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐥 “𝐍𝐢𝐦𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐢” 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐣𝐚 didn’t just break records; he completely redefined what’s possible in the high-altitude world. From serving in the Special Boat Service to pushing the human body beyond its limits above 8,000 meters, his mindset is on another level entirely.
If there’s one thing Nimsdai taught us, it’s that when life tells you it’s impossible, you just turn up the volume and keep climbing.

Nirmal "Nims" Purja is missing after a massive avalanche struck Broad Peak in Pakistan on Thursday, July 30, 2026. As of today, July 31, 2026, four bodies have been recovered, but authorities have not yet confirmed their identities, and search operations are actively continuing for the remaining unaccounted-for climbers.

The Expedition: Purja was leading a 10-person international team consisting of five other Nepalis (Kili Pemba Sherpa, Nima Sherpa, Nawang Thindu Sherpa, Gyalu Sherpa), Mallory Geis (USA), Wang Zhong (China), Sohail Sakhi (Pakistan), and an Omani national.
