A Legend Departs: Tribute to Olympian Gurbax Singh Grewal

​Deeply saddened to learn about the passing of legendary hockey Olympian Shri Gurbax Singh Grewal today, April 24, 2026, at his residence in Zirakpur.

​A stalwart of the 1968 Mexico Olympics, Gurbax Singh ji, along with his brother Balbir Singh Grewal, created history by becoming the first pair of real brothers to represent India together in the Olympics—a record that remains etched in the golden chapters of Indian Hockey.

​Having served with distinction as a Senior Sports Officer in Western Railway, his contribution to the sport as both a player and an administrator was unparalleled.

​May Waheguru bless his noble soul and grant strength to the Grewal family to bear this irreparable loss.

​With profound grief and heavy hearts, the Surjit Hockey Society, Jalandhar, expresses its deepest condolences on the sudden and untimely passing of Shri Davinder Singh (Tony Pajhi), who suffered a massive heart attack this morning.

​A true stalwart of the game, Tony Pajhi’s contributions as a Coach for the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) and Indian Railways have left an indelible mark on Indian hockey. His passion, mentorship, and selfless dedication to the sport will be deeply missed by the entire hockey fraternity.

​We pray to the Almighty to grant eternal peace to the departed soul and give strength to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss.

*DC Jalandhar Varjeet Walia becomes 22nd President of Surjit Hockey Society*

JALANDHAR, April 22 – Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar, Mr. Varjeet Walia, IAS, has officially been appointed as the 22nd President of the renowned Surjit Hockey Society. The society, a cornerstone of Indian hockey, was established in 1984 to honor the legacy of Olympian Surjit Singh Randhawa, the legendary former captain of the Indian Hockey Team.

The appointment was formalized during a high-level meeting chaired by the Society’s Working President, Mr. Lekh Raj Nayar, IRS (Retd.), in accordance with the organization’s constitution. During the proceedings, the members expressed profound gratitude to the outgoing President, former DC Mr. Himanshu Aggarwal, for his dedicated service and contributions to the sport.

According to the CEO of the Society, Mr. Iqbal Singh Sandhu, PCS (Retd.), the committee members met the newly appointed President and Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Varjeet Walia, after the meeting. He was apprised of the Society’s activities, the functioning of the Surjit Hockey Academy, and the preparations for the 43rd Indian Oil Surjit Hockey Tournament–2026.

DC Varjeet Walia appreciated the efforts of the Society and assured full support from the district administration for the promotion of hockey to the society. DC Varjeet Walia further stated that the vast experience of the Society would also be utilized during the Asian Hockey Championship scheduled to be held in October this year by the Punjab Government.

During the meeting, a two-minute silence was observed to pay homage to the late Gurvinder Singh ‘Gullu’ Bathla, Founder Member and Chief PRO of the Society, on his untimely demise. On this occasion Lekh Raj Nayar & Lakhwinder Pal Singh Khahira (Working President), Ranbir Singh Tutt (Secretary), Surinder Singh Bhapa (General Secretary), Ram Partap and Mr. Amrik Singh Pawar (Senior Vice Presidents), Simardeep Singh Bathla, Harinder Singh Sangha, Kulwinder Singh Thiyara, Gurinder Singh Sangha, Mr. Sukhwinder Singh Lali, Guriqbal Singh Dhillon, and Karandeep Singh.

ਕੁਝ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਖੋਂਦੇ, ਸਗੋਂ ਸਾਡੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡੇ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਦੀਵੀ ਚੁੱਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਦਲ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਮੇਰੇ ਅਤਿ ਨਜ਼ਦੀਕੀ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਗੁਰਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ 'ਗੁੱਲੂ' ਬੱਠਲਾ ਦਾ ਅਚਾਨਕ ਚਲੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇੱਕ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ ਮੇਰੀ ਰੂਹ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਦਾ ਵੱਖ ਹੋਣਾ ਹੈ। ਸਾਡੀ 42 ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਾਂਝ, ਜੋ ਸਕੂਲ ਦੇ ਹਾਕੀ ਮੈਦਾਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ, ਅੱਜ ਇੱਕ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਮੋੜ 'ਤੇ ਆ ਕੇ ਰੁਕ ਗਈ ਹੈ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਯਾਦਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਰਮਾਇਆ ਹੀ ਬਾਕੀ ਹੈ।

ਹਾਕੀ ਦੇ ਮੈਦਾਨ ਦਾ ਉਹ ਮਾਹਰ 'ਫਾਰਵਰਡ' ਗੁੱਲੂ ਹਾਕੀ ਦੇ ਮੈਦਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਤੇਜ਼-ਤਰਾਰ ਖੇਡ ਅਤੇ ਫਾਰਵਰਡ ਲਾਈਨ ਦੀ ਮਾਹਰ ਚਾਲ ਲਈ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਭਾ ਹੀ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਐਂਡ ਸਿੰਧ ਬੈਂਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਪਾਰੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਹਰ ਵੱਡੇ ਟੂਰਨਾਮੈਂਟ ਦੀ ਟਰਾਫੀ ਬੈਂਕ ਦੀ ਝੋਲੀ ਪਾਈ। ਹਾਕੀ ਲਈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਮਰਪਣ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਖੇਡ ਸਕੱਤਰ ਦੇ ਅਹੁਦੇ ਤੱਕ ਪਹੁੰਚੇ ਅਤੇ ਬਤੌਰ ਮੈਨੇਜਰ ਸੇਵਾਮੁਕਤ ਹੋਏ। ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਹਾਕੀ ਸੁਸਾਇਟੀ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਥੰਮ੍ਹ ਅਤੇ ਚੀਫ਼ ਪੀ.ਆਰ.ਓ. ਵਜੋਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕੇਗਾ।

1990 ਦੀ ਉਹ ਯਾਦ ਅਤੇ ਰਿਸ਼ਤਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਗੂੜ੍ਹਤਾ
ਯਾਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਝਰੋਖੇ 'ਚੋਂ ਅੱਜ ਵੀ 26 ਫਰਵਰੀ 1994 ਦਾ ਉਹ ਦਿਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਦਿਲ 'ਤੇ ਉੱਕਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਿਆਹ ਸਮੇਂ ਗੁੱਲੂ ਨੇ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਿਰ 'ਤੇ ਪੱਗ ਸਜਾਈ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਪੱਗ ਦਾ ਹਰ ਲੜ ਸਾਡੀ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਦੀ ਉਸ ਗੰਢ ਵਰਗਾ ਸੀ, ਜੋ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੋਰ ਮਜ਼ਬੂਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਗਈ। ਰਿਸ਼ਤਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੋੜਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਇਨਸਾਨ । 1990 ਦਾ ਉਹ ਦਿਨ ਤਾਜ਼ਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਰੂਸੀ ਹਾਕੀ ਟੀਮ ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਹਾਕੀ ਟੂਰਨਾਮੈਂਟ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਈ ਸੀ। ਤਸਵੀਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਾਲ ਪਗੜੀ ਸਜਾ ਕੇ ਰੂਸੀ ਕੋਚ ਨਾਲ ਖੜ੍ਹਾ ਮੁਸਕਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਗੁੱਲੂ ਅੱਜ ਵੀ ਸਾਡੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਹੈ। ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਉਹ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇੱਕ ਦੋਸਤ ਨਹੀਂ, ਮੇਰਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਸੀ।

ਸੇਵਾਮੁਕਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਵੀ ਗੁੱਲੂ ਨੇ ਸਮਾਜ ਸੇਵਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਕਸਦ ਬਣਾਇਆ। "ਬੱਠਲਾ ਮੈਰਿਜ ਕਨਸਲਟੈਂਟ" ਵਿੱਚ ਬਤੌਰ ਐਮ.ਡੀ. ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਈ ਘਰ ਵਸਾਏ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੰਨਣਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਅੱਜ ਦੇ ਦੌਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੋੜਨਾ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੀ ਇਬਾਦਤ ਹੈ। ਹੱਸਮੁੱਖ ਸੁਭਾਅ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਮਰਤਾ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਖ਼ਸੀਅਤ ਦੇ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਗਹਿਣੇ ਸਨ ਜੋ ਹਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਸਨ।

ਅੰਤਿਮ ਵਿਦਾਇਗੀ ਅਤੇ ਅਰਦਾਸ :
ਅੱਜ ਮਿਤੀ 15 ਅਪ੍ਰੈਲ 2026 (ਬੁੱਧਵਾਰ), ਸਮਾਂ ਦੁਪਹਿਰ 12:30 ਤੋਂ 2:00 ਵਜੇ ਤੱਕ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਨੌਵੀਂ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ, ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਨਗਰ, ਜਲੰਧਰ ਵਿਖੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਿਮਿੱਤ ਅੰਤਿਮ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਮਨ ਬਹੁਤ ਭਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਸੰਸਕਾਰ ਸਮੇਂ ਭਾਰੀ ਸੰਖਿਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਹੁੰਚੇ ਓਲੰਪੀਅਨ ਅਤੇ ਪਤਵੰਤੇ ਸੱਜਣ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦੀ ਗਵਾਹੀ ਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ ਕਿ ਗੁੱਲੂ ਨੇ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਮੈਦਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਜਿੱਤ ਹਾਸਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ।

ਗੁੱਲੂ ਵੀਰ! ਤੇਰੇ ਜਾਣ ਦਾ ਦਰਦ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ। ਤੂੰ ਸਾਡੇ ਦਿਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਖੁਸ਼ਮਿਜ਼ਾਜ਼ੀ ਅਤੇ ਹਾਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਲਗਨ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਜਿਉਂਦਾ ਰਹੇਂਗਾ। ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਯਾਦਾਂ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਸਾਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਹਿਕਦੀਆਂ ਰਹਿਣਗੀਆਂ।
