Yoga often says, “Surrender the ego.” At first, this sounds strange. Many people may think it means losing their identity. But yoga does not ask us to destroy ourselves. It asks us to let go of the false idea of who we think we are.
The ego is the voice inside us that constantly says- “I am better or worse”, “I must control everything”, “I need everyone’s approval.” It is the part of us that becomes mingled and attached to the titles, achievements, opinions, and even suffering. The ego creates separation -me versus you, mine versus yours. Because of this, it often brings fear, anger, jealousy, and insecurity.
So how do we surrender it?
Not by fighting it, but by becoming aware of it.
Every time we pause before reacting in anger, the ego becomes weaker. Every time we admit we are wrong, forgive someone, work without expectations, or accept that we cannot control everything, we loosen the ego’s grip. You might have experienced this before too but was not aware of it, ego surrender happens in small daily moments of humility, honesty, and awareness.
And to whom do we surrender it?
Yoga says we surrender it to something greater than our physical & limited self. Different people call it by different names; God, the Universe, Truth, Divine Consciousness, or simply Life itself. The name matters less than the experience. It is the understanding that we are not the center of everything. We are part of a much larger whole.
We suffer because we think we are separate from the whole. The moment we realise we are the whole fear disappears. In the same way, surrendering the ego means remembering that we are deeply connected to life, not separate from it.
True surrender is not defeat. It is freedom, freedom from defending the fragility of ‘I’.
When the ego becomes quieter, peace becomes louder.
