It is a natural human tendency to hanker after pleasure and avoid pain, but this world is a place of mixed experiences; no one can remain in a state of constant pleasure. Indeed, pleasure and pain come in turn like summer and winter. People seek permanent joy outside, which is impossible to attain. In reality, joy can not be found in the outer world. The fountain of joy can only be found within. In the Bhagvad Gita the Lord teaches that true joy is within each one of us, not in the material world of objects. Then, in the Bhagvad Gita (18: 38), the Lord reminds us that spiritual joy is far from the worldly pleasure that is like nectar in the beginning but ultimately like poison. Realising this we must remain aware that the pleasure that comes from contact with the sense objects always leads to misery and suffering. To avoid the many pitfalls along the way, we need to live in this world intelligently.
