The Royan show jumping arena is not perfectly flat. It has a gentle natural slope, so riders can encounter both slightly uphill and downhill lines depending on the course design. This is one of the characteristics that distinguishes it from many modern, completely level arenas.

Horses need to stay balanced when jumping uphill or downhill.

Experienced riders generally adapt quickly, but horses that are used only to flat arenas may need a round or two to become comfortable with the terrain.
