Talapuṣpapuṭa is the first of the 108 Karanas described in the Natya Shastra.
The name can be understood as:
• Tala – palm of the hand
• Pushpa – flower
• P**a – cupped or folded container
Together, Talapuṣpapuṭa means “hands cupped as though holding an offering of flowers.”
In this Karana:
• The hands are joined in Pushpaputa Hasta (cupped palms held together).
• The arms are gently extended in front of the body.
• The legs are positioned in a balanced stance, usually associated with Araimandi-like bending in Bharatanatyam reconstructions.
• The torso remains erect and graceful.
• The overall movement conveys offering, reverence, devotion, and auspiciousness.
Talapuṣpapuṭa represents:
• Offering flowers to a deity
• Prayer and worship
• Respect and surrender
• Welcoming divine presence
