Folio.

It's your account number(s) with one fund house. Which is why you can end up with several without doing anything wrong. Invest with four different fund houses and you hold at least four folios. Same person, same money, four numbers.

And here's the bit worth knowing. India has 28.09 crore* mutual fund folios. It counts accounts, not people — and the two are very different.

We're not going to tell you what the real investor number is, because we'd be guessing and you'd have no way to check. But next time you see the folio count used as a headcount, you'll know what you're looking at.

That's how much of retail equity money in Indian mutual funds has been sitting there for more than two years.

The story everyone tells about Indian retail investors is that they panic. The industry's own numbers say something different.

Being fair about the rest of the numbers: 21% of it is less than a year old. But a good part of that is people who have only just started, which is a very different thing from people leaving. And an average hides a lot - some people did panic, and some of them are still out.

A Value fund and a Contra fund are sold as opposites. One buys what looks cheap. The other buys what everyone else has given up on.

Since February, SEBI lets a fund house run both on one condition - the two portfolios can't overlap by more than 50%.
