I am going to cycle 1000km in May either virtually or on the road to raise funds for Irish Motor Neu Vincent's hospital. Our whole world fell apart.
In 2020 instead of heading to New York and the Dominican Republic to have our amazing scuba diving holiday, my wife Sinéad was admitted to St. It was there she was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. Within a week we registered with Irish Motor Neurone Association and from that day the support they have given us is hard to put into words. They have supplied, a wheelchair, electric bed, IPad with
communication software. They also provided home care grants and counseling grants for the whole family. On top of that we have a nurse who we can call. She has an area from Wicklow to Kerry and yet has time to talk, visit and advise us when needed. There are only 4 of those for the entire country. For the 1st year anniversary of the diagnosis I want to give something back and I decided to attempt to cycle 1000km in May. This will be done as a combination of indoor cycling using a turbo trainer and outdoor on the lovely Wexford routes. These days its hard to get out for too long some it will be mostly done indoors. I will track my progress using strava. Another organisation I will fund raise for is Research Motor Neurone. Research Motor Neurone (RMN) is a charitable organisation based in Trinity College Dublin founded in 2007. The purpose of the Foundation is to support research in Motor Neurone Disease (MND), also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) undertaken by Trinity’s MND research group. RMN also strives to increase awareness of this incurable disease at both a national and international level. MND research in Ireland is led by Orla Hardiman, Professor of Neurology at Trinity College Dublin and a world authority on MND and related neurodegeneration. Professor Hardiman is also the Health Service Executive (HSE) National Clinical Lead for Neurology. Ongoing research is needed to discover the cause, treatment and methods of improving quality of life for MND sufferers and their families.
