Today, on World Pharmacists Day, I am pausing to recognise a profession woven into everyday care.

This year, we have explored listening, leadership capacity, healthy systems and the courage to release what no longer serves. Each theme points to the same truth: healthier futures depend on people supported to think clearly, act with integrity and contribute fully.

The 2026 theme, “Empowering pharmacists for healthier futures”, invites us to celebrate how far pharmacy has come and ask what pharmacists need next.

To every pharmacist who listens, reassures, challenges, safeguards and serves: thank you.

What might become possible if pharmacists were fully empowered to use their expertise?

Not every ending is a failure.

We often celebrate what we begin, build and grow. Yet mature leadership also asks us to recognise when something has served its purpose.

That may mean simplifying a process, changing a responsibility, completing a project or releasing a commitment that no longer fits.

The challenge is not to abandon what is difficult. It is to distinguish between difficulty that is part of growth and friction that is asking for change.

Sometimes letting go is evidence that leadership has been paying attention.

What might become possible if something changed, simplified or ended well?

Not every useful leadership insight arrives in a meeting or programme. Sometimes it begins with one thoughtful question.

The Value of Positive Practice is my monthly newsletter for pharmacists, healthcare leaders, coaches and business owners who want space to think more clearly about leadership, responsibility and sustainable growth.

Each edition brings a personal reflection, one substantial leadership idea and practical questions you can take into your own work.

If you value thoughtful perspectives without noise, hype or quick answers, I would be glad to welcome you.

There is a point in the year when leadership is fully in motion.

Expectations are clear.
Responsibilities are established.
Decisions are being made.

And yet, many leaders notice a quieter tension underneath.

Not a lack of skill.
Not a lack of commitment.

But values under pressure.

Knowing what matters, yet feeling pulled towards what is urgent.
Making decisions that appear reasonable, yet do not sit comfortably afterwards.

What often goes missing is the space to pause and ask:

What is this tension asking of me as a leader?

A 90-Minute Strategic Thinking Session offers a confidential space to explore what is truly at stake and consider your next step with clarity and integrity.

If this feels aligned, you can schedule here:

What if the decision you are trying to make does not need a faster answer, but better space to think?

Leadership often leaves little room to step back from immediate demands and listen to what may be asking for attention.

A 90-minute Strategic Thinking Session offers confidential, protected space to explore one leadership question with clarity and care.

This is not about being told what to do. It is an opportunity to think well, consider what matters and make a more conscious choice about what comes next.

If one issue has been quietly following you, perhaps it deserves your full attention.

Reserve your session: https://racheldungan.coachesconsole.com/products?action=addToCart&pid=668d71add2172f3cab79fd0e&plan=0

What happens when the leader is no longer expected to hold every answer?

Teams develop differently when people are given space to think, contribute and take appropriate ownership. That does not mean stepping away from responsibility. It means leading conversations that strengthen judgement, trust and shared capacity.

Lead With Coaching programmes help leaders and teams practise a coaching approach in the real situations where pressure, decisions and professional responsibility are present.

If you want to develop healthier leaders, stronger teams and more thoughtful conversations at work, explore the LCI programmes.

Past investment does not have to decide the future.

We can remain committed to a project, service or way of working because of how much time, money, energy or hope we have already invested in it.

That history matters. But something can have been exactly right for an earlier season and no longer be right now.

Leadership maturity allows us to keep the learning without automatically keeping everything that came with it.

A useful question is:

If we were making this decision today, knowing what we know now, would we still choose it?

What have you learned to work around?

Not everything that drains an organisation is obviously broken. Sometimes it is the meeting no one questions, the process everyone compensates for, the decision that keeps moving to next month or the responsibility that never quite shifts.

The cost may look small at first. Over time, it can appear in energy, attention, trust and leadership capacity.

A new season can be a useful time to notice what we have simply become accustomed to carrying.

Ask yourself:

If we were starting today, would we still choose this?

There are moments in leadership where nothing is obviously wrong.

And yet, something begins to narrow.

Not in what is said, but in how we listen.

In my work with pharmacy and healthcare leaders, I often notice how quickly listening can shift under pressure. We move towards interpretation, resolution, and certainty.

Before understanding is complete, decisions can begin to form.
The challenge is not difference itself.

The challenge is what we stop hearing when someone sees the world differently from us.

This month’s LinkedIn newsletter explores listening across difference, power, perspective, and the quieter dynamics shaping leadership conversations.
