Just a post to clarify that rumours of the demise of the Supporters Club are premature. We are not gone away nor have we folded. The reason for our inactivity in recent years was simply because of the 2 nights SIS racing meant there was no real need for us. Saturday night was turned into a novice racing night with few opportunities to sponsor any sweeps. There was SIS money available for the Saturday nights so we were not really required. So now with just one SIS meeting and during the day time, the picture has changed. So no decision has been taken yet on what the Supporters Club will do. A reminder that over the last 4/5 years the Supporters club have pumped over €13,000 into various sweepstakes . We have rarely refused when asked to help out. But we are a separate voice to the KGOBA and maybe that’s a good thing. Two different voices with a single aim and that is to promote Tralee as a greyhound track and also to increase numbers coming through the gates. We had a superbly organised Ballymac Kennels Festival of racing on Friday night by KGOBA but it still failed to draw a decent crowd. The restaurant was less than half full I would estimate from looking up at it. If we are to get Tralee motoring again we need more benefit nights, we need more promotions and we need to get patrons making a night at the Dogs their night out. We need to maximise attendances during summer if it every arrives. So there are many facets to restoring Tralee to something like it was. There is still too much of them and us. I don’t like the way some people are ignored in decision making. I don’t like the way some people won’t accept when they are gone - they are gone. I don’t like the way some people are being treated. We need to get rid of the toxicity in the stadium and work together.
My final grievance is on the Awards night which the Supporters Club resurrected and co sponsored with KGOBA down through the last decade is apparently going ahead this year but the Supporters Club was never consulted. It would have been courtesy to at least ask us were we interested in being involved. But it is what it is and I congratulate all the winners and hope ye have a great night.

So at this point just to reiterate the Supporters Club is alive and no decision has been taken on it’s future. It

When the Black Dog barks - Who Listens?

This is a lengthy post so if you are not interested in Mental Illness – Stop reading – I am not forcing you to read this post and I am not asking you to agree with me – but it’s been such a bad month in Kerry – I just felt the need to write something
For those who might not know the Black Dog means mental distress usually depression but can be used for anxiety and any form in reality as they are all cousins.

The profile of mental health has been raised significantly in the past few years, partly due to campaigning from mental health charities and partly due to high-profile people –speaking publicly and candidly about their own mental health problems. All of this should be welcomed as it removes the stigma around mental health and encourages people who are suffering in silence to seek help.
However, the awareness movement is not without its pitfalls. It is sometimes co-opted by people to advance their own agenda, such as increasing a fan base or grabbing media attention.
The awareness movement has also, at times, been hijacked by politicians and bureaucrats. They publicly declare their commitment to raising awareness – drawing plaudits for their sensitivity and bravery – while simultaneously under-investing in mental health services like our politicians and a dysfunctional HSE.
Our politicians claim to be committed to improving mental health but they continue to cut financial support and this is harming mental health services. In fact only for voluntary movements and the generosity of the public, we would be in a far worse position than we are currently at.
The system is creaking and the politicians don’t care because there appear to be very few votes to be gained on highlighting Mental Health issues.
Not ‘either-or’ but ‘both’
Mental health stigma is of course very real, affecting the lives of people with mental health problems as well as those close to them. Research has shown that fear of being labelled and stigmatised affects people’s willingness to disclose their illness and seek treatment, so it is laudable that ignorance about the causes of mental ill health and treatment options are being discussed.
But the debate around awareness shouldn’t cover up the very serious problems mental health services face. It is all very well to tell people that it is okay to have a mental health problem and that they should seek the necessary treatment, but if the healthcare system isn’t functioning as it should, awareness campaigns ring hollow.
Public education on mental health problems, and on how to find help, needs to go hand-in-hand with making improvements to mental health services. While politicians speak about mental health awareness and the importance of seeking mental health treatment, further cuts to HSE mental health services are hanging over the fate of those afflicted by mental ill health.
Those in charge of the mental healthcare system should be held accountable ( not the brilliant nurses and some counsellors ) and not be allowed to hide behind the sometimes nebulous awareness debate. People with mental health problems not only need public awareness and understanding, but a functioning mental health service. They need both. Our mental health service is in crisis mode right now.
People are not coping well with mental health issues and our self harm and su***de rates have now reached epidemic levels. It must stop but it won’t under the current structure – The well worn phrase of “just talk – find somebody who will listen” while helpful is not the answer otherwise su***de rates would be falling not rising. No-it goes deeper – involves lots of emotional stuff – financial pressures – relationship problems – addiction and a myriad of reasons that I am not qualified to speak on. But one truth I know – those who self harm do so because they are not happy in their own skin.
That is what needs addressing as well as a more caring and understanding society. I would look at it like this “There but for the grace of God go I” so complacency is a “no-no”.
No folks- we all have to be watchful and never fall into the trap that it “ could never happen to me” because it can and might – for that reason there is one message I would like to send out and ye can take it or leave it .
I’m so tired of being judged by people who know nothing about mental health. Imagine a life where people say “you’re a drama queen”, “over protective”, “crazy”, “not normal”, “unsocial”, “you hate people”, “you make life worse than it is…” And “get over it, nothing’s wrong”, “everyone has a bad day, stop playing the victim”, “here’s a tiny violin”. “You’re crazy”. “You’re mental”.
Then think, why would you do that? What would make you choose a life where that is how you want people to see you?
Answer? You wouldn’t choose it. – So if it’s Anxiety or Depression – or a Personality Disorder why would you choose it?
So Nobody Chooses Mental illness – so Stop Judging – Change your attitude – that my friends would be a good start. My thoughts are always with people who feel they’ve had enough and can’t take it anymore. They take their own lives by committing su***de. It’s time we started talking about su***de as troubling as it is. Some workers in the field caution us about using the word SU***DE - they say it’s “triggering “ I will tell what’s “triggering “ - cutting someone down from a tree out the back garden or opening the garden shed and finding a loved one or friend hanging with a belt around their neck. That’s triggering and the most awful experience for anyone to go through. So let’s start with the truth - calling a spade a spade, if someone takes their own life then it’s su***de. The more times we say that the better the chance of doing something about it. Some will say su***de is cowardly but I say it’s not because it takes some courage to take one’s own life. When one takes this drastic action their mind is shot - gone - not rational - just weary from wrestling with the Black Dog - they are not in control. So no Shane or no blame. Let’s all do better - let’s start by changing how we view mental health - lets remember words hurt, our actions can hurt, our inaction can hurt, isolation and loneliness hurts, not saying hello can hurt, rejection can hurt, addiction definitely corrodes values, death hurts, draconian bosses hurt, bullying hurts and so on. A public laugh or smile can change once a person goes home and hides from the world. We need to start by taking small steps - I would even think it’s time to set up some form of discussion groups in every community in the county about Mental Health issues and su***de prevention. Like the Neighbourhood Watch but very different - let’s face the Government are not going to do anything. Unless the word “ Green “is on it forget it. It’s been a long read but this Gospel according the Mortimer I felt needed to be said. If anyone is touched by this or addiction issues, by the way feel free to contact me - my DM’s are open. The Final of the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium Supporters Club ON3 Stake was the highlight of Saturday night’s card at Tralee and Scart Taylor proved a popular winner for Brendan O’Mahony from Scartaglen.

Scart Taylor had won his heat in two earlier rounds but was only third in the semi-final to Sweeping Rock after a slow start. He was drawn in trap three in the final but there was a lot of early pace outside him in Sweeping Rock and Pennylane Madam so he appeared up against it. But he was quickly away this time in a 3.18 split but Pennylane Madam was quicker away from trap five in a 3.16 split and Sweeping Rock was away in 3.18. This meant something had to give at the opening bend and it was Sweeping Rock who moved wide and took Pennylane Madam and Quintana with her and that changed the complexion of the race.

It allowed Scart Taylor to skip clear and lead around all four bends with Tom Bomb and Rathronan Hawk giving chase and obviously the three outside runners were out of contention. But as the leader rounded the final bend, Rathronan Hawk emerged as a serious threat on the rails and it was not over by any means. Scart Taylor needed the line as Rathronan Hawk was closing with every stride and as both crossed the line together it was a hard to call. But Scart Taylor had survived by a neck to win in 29.10 and Brendan O’Mahony is €2000 richer thanks to the Supporters Club. Rathronan Hawk collected €800 while Tom Bomb got €400 for third place.

Brendan O’Mahony was delighted with the win “He needed to break and while he didn’t bomb out of traps he enjoyed luck at the opening bend when there was crowding. He just held on and I know I was lucky but that is racing. I was often unlucky in finals and you just have to take in on the chin once your dog returns healthy. I would like to thank the Supporters Club for the sponsorship as it was a nice pot in tough times”

This young man deserves your support. He and his young club Ballymac Celtic are catering for a lot of young folk and they have been very successful. These are tough times for everyone and for sports clubs.
