đ Order Your Copy of My Book Today My name is Janine van Someren and Iâm passionate about passing on science based wellbeing tips to the clients I work with on a daily basis who are struggling with the stresses
I canât remove your pain-in-the-ass boss đ
And I canât magically fix every stressful dynamic in life either.
But what I can do is help people understand how to quieten the noise.
Because many people arenât failingâŠ
Theyâre overstimulated.
Overloaded.
Always âon.â
Constantly responding.
Rarely pausing long enough for their nervous system to fully recover.
And over time, that constant noise starts to affect:
đenergy
đsleep
đfocus
đpatience
đmood
đrecovery
đrelationships
What fascinates me in my work is that often the biggest shifts come from very small habits.
đŁA calmer start to the morning. đŁA quieter commute.
đŁA short walk.
đŁPutting the phone away earlier.
đŁLearning how to pause before reacting.
And I genuinely see the difference.
Clients feel calmer.
More energised.
More resilient.
More themselves again.
Not because life suddenly became perfectâŠ
but because the noise was dialled down.
This reel is a short clip from my recent conversation about stress, recovery and nervous system regulation with Clare McKenna - you can listen to the full interview from the link in my bio.
If it resonates, links are also in my bio for workshops, talks, coaching and my book âš
Ah the life of a cat⊠heâs the inspo behind my recent use of cartoons to explore rest and recovery⊠cats are experts in resting⊠in fact when Iâm feeling at my most stressed or tired itâs always a good idea to spend time alongside BuddyâŠ
Here are the tip 5 lessons from life alongside BuddyâŠ
1. Buddy will track down the warmest spot in the house and take up residence without a hint of guilt⊠do you know the people or places that help you feel safe, settled and restored?
2. Whenever you can pause and take a moment. Buddy doesnât wait until the weekend to relax. Admittedly he doesnât need to! Still itâs worth reminding yourself that recovery every day is key - do not just wait until the weekend!
3. Stop and smell the flowers. Thereâs a lot to be said for pausing to take in whatâs happening right in front of you without simply rushing on to the next thing.
4. Stay curious. If a box arrives - no doubt filled with books for me or cycling kit for Ken- then Budddy is straight in. Curiosity about yourself and life is a great thing for looking after yourself⊠next time youâre thinking why canât I cope? Switch to curiosity and explore whatâs draining your capacity? What are you carrying thatâs draining you?
5. Donât forget to play. Staying playful, sharing funny memes and laughing with friends. All great quick resets for a nervous system thatâs strung out. The more often you can be playful the easier it is for your nervous system to relax and enjoy the lighter side of life.
Just some of the many life lessons to be gained when you tune into your pets beaviourâŠ
Recovery tips from Buddy just keep coming but I wonder what would your pet add to this list? Let me know!

A QUESTION WE KEEP HEARING
It might begin as a conversation about work.
Or stress.
Or sleep.
Or confidence.
But somewhere beneath it, thereâs often a much bigger question:
âWhat do I want the next chapter of my life to look like?â
Weâre hearing this from women who may be five, ten or even fifteen years away from retirement.
Theyâre not necessarily looking to stop working.
Theyâre wondering whether they want to keep living and working in quite the same way.
Could I reduce my hours?
Do something more meaningful?
Start a business?
Take a break?
Use my experience differently?
Or simply create more space for the things Iâve been putting off?
These arenât just retirement questions.
Theyâre life transition questions.
And theyâre at the heart of many of the conversations weâll be having on The Messy Midlife Toolkit.
What does your next chapter look like when you imagine it?

You go to bed exhausted⊠but your brain hasnât got the memo.
Your body is tired.
Your eyes are tired.
Youâve been looking forward to getting into bed all day.
Then your head hits the pillow and suddenly your mind is replaying conversations, planning tomorrow, remembering what you forgot and mentally opening another ten tabs.
Thatâs the difference between being tired and being wired.
You may be physically ready to stop, but your nervous system is still activated. It hasnât yet received the signal that the busy part of the day is over and itâs safe to shift into recovery.
This is one of the most useful things wearable technology can help us understand.
The data becomes an X-ray of your day.
It makes the invisible visible.
You can begin to see which parts of your day are creating strain, where recovery is missing and why you still feel switched on long after work has finished.
Sometimes itâs the late meeting.
Sometimes itâs the commute.
Sometimes itâs constant notifications, an intense workout, evening emails or carrying the day straight into bed.
The data doesnât create the change. The conversation does.
Once you can see the pattern, you can start experimenting with small ways to help your system stand down.
A short walk after work.
A screen-free buffer before bed.
Slow breathing.
A proper end to the working day.
Not another wellbeing overhaul. Just a clearer understanding of whatâs keeping you wired.
