A busy week draws to a close — and thankfully the fine weather finally came around, giving us some great swims.

Huge congratulations to Conor O'Brien, Matthew McGarrigle, Carol Wortman, Franklin Hughes, and Anita Hartsock on their super efforts and achievements this week — brilliant all round. We did have to cancel two further swims due to unsafe conditions, but we look forward to getting those swimmers out on the water very soon.

Congratulations to Carol Wortman who completed the Fastnet Swim today in a time of 7 hours, 12 minutes and 40 seconds – an amazing effort! 🎉

Unfortunately Franklin Hughes wasn't able to finish today, but huge credit to him for taking on this challenge. We hope to see him back on the start line soon. 💪

The sun is eventually shining in West Cork and the M3 buoy telling us the water temp is 13 degrees, so time to come out of hibernation and start thinking about swims :-) Came across this this in O' Donovan's Sketches of Carbery recently, A Captain Paul Boyton swimming the "20" miles through the Gasconane Sound and landing at Trafraska Bay, way back in 1875.

"A short time ago the celebrated Captain Paul Boyton, the American, whose daring feats with the life apparatus have been chronicled in all the daily papers, equipped in his extraordinary costume, during a stormy night, swam ashore from one of the American mail packets, close to the Gasconane, a distance of about twenty miles, and landed safely at Trafraska bay, in the neighbourhood of Baltimore. This is one of the most remarkable feats of personal daring achieved during the present century ; the sea running mountains high at the time, and so rough that no boat could possibly escape being swamped; however the gallant captain, with "his boat upon his back, and paddling his own canoe," as he quaintly and forcibly described his own position, when about six miles off the Fastnet, launched himself into the treacherous deep, and, after seven hours' most adventurous and sensational paddling, not only reached terra-firma but lived to have his name recorded amongst the wonderful men of the age. https://www.openwaterpedia.com/wiki/The_Story_of_Paul_Boyton
