It is with deep sadness that Roscommon Gaels has learned of the passing of esteemed clubman and former officer, Mick Fahey.
Mick’s association with Roscommon Gaels was deep and lifelong. As a player, he was a member of the celebrated senior teams of 1974 and 1975—teams whose success marked a golden period in the club and whose legacy has endured throughout the decades.
His contribution continued long after his playing days. Mick served as a coach and manager of both underage and adult teams and held a number of positions on the Club Executive, giving generously of his time, knowledge and experience for the betterment of Roscommon Gaels. Also serving many years at County level, as PRO before stepping into the role of Chairperson of the County Board, a position held for 4 years. During these years he championed many initiatives where his leadership and drive to make change lay the foundations of many developments that followed.
Mick’s influence extended far beyond the roles he formally held. He remained a trusted confidant and adviser to many officers in the club who followed him in leadership positions. His wisdom and deep understanding of the club were always shared, and his support was greatly valued.
He also possessed an exceptional knowledge of the history and traditions of Roscommon Gaels. Mick played an important role when work was undertaken to research and document the club’s history, generously sharing his memories of the people, teams and events that shaped our club.
In 2023, Mick joined a number of fellow former Club Chairpersons at St Coman’s Park—fondly known as The Lough—for the unveiling of a memorial plaque commemorating the history and significance of this special place to Roscommon Gaels - ( Pictured above on the far Left).
In October 2024, Mick attended a reunion, alongside his brother Ollie, of the successful Roscommon Gaels senior teams of 1974 and 1975, held ahead of the County Final. It was a memorable occasion which brought together members of a very special era in our club’s history and provided an opportunity to honour the achievements and enduring friendships of those teams.
Mick leaves behind an immense legacy within Roscommon Gaels—as a player, coach, manager, officer, adviser and, above all, a devoted clubman. His passing represents a loss to our club and to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Roscommon Gaels extends its deepest sympathy to Mick’s beloved wife Eileen; his daughter Bríana and her partner Rossa; his grandchildren Aurelia and Lonn; his brothers Noel, Gerry and Ollie; his sister Maura; and his extended family and many friends.
The Club will form a Guard of Honour following Micks funeral mass. Attendees are asked to assemble in Club Colours outside the Church immediately
following the ceremony.
