𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆

The Portsalon Past Captains competition was held on Saturday. After refreshments in the clubhouse (and a lot of catching up), the golfers battled strong winds and the odd bout of heavy rain.

The day was not about high scores, but having a good catch up with friends.

Congratulations to the eventual winners, who received their prizes at their annual dinner. It was good to see past captains from all years, with some from over 40 years ago.

Recognition was given for their past efforts in developing Portsalon GC. Thanks to the hospitality staff and to the organisers of this event.

𝗗𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹

Cathal Canning's Donegal League team entertained Ballybofey & Stranorlar on Sunday afternoon in the first leg of the Paddy Carr Donegal League final in Portsalon. The hosts came out with a 4-1 win on the day, leaving them in a decent position for the return leg in the Twin Towns on Sunday next.

It was a battling performance from the defending two-in-a-row champs, as several games had to come from behind to get their wins.

The opening pairing of Kevin Hensey & Jack Friel did just that, taking a 1up advantage onto the 18th tee after a see-saw contest and securing the par they needed to hold their advantage with a cool two-putt.

Behind them, the match two pairings of Stephen Connolly & Eamonn McConigley and Paddy McGowan & Donal Callaghan also put winning points on the board in good style to move Portsalon to a 3-0 lead.

The only blip on the afternoon came in match four, where Enda McElhinney & Shane Sandilands were unable to retrieve and early deficit and lost on the 17th green.

More good news was soon to follow with the anchor pairing of Ronan McClafferty & Shane McGlade completing their win on the 16th green.

A good day for those in yellow and black but still a job to be done in Ballybofey next Sunday where the home side will be confidence of achieving something similar and, once more, it could get very close as the finish line approaches.

The matches tee off at 1.30pm and all support is welcome as the Portsalon side bids to win a third Donegal League title on the spin.

𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗠𝗰 𝗗𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝗖𝘂𝗽

The annual Mary Mc Daid Cup (in memory of all deceased members of Portsalon, Letterkenny and Rosapenna Golf Clubs) took place on Saturday last (5th August) with representatives from Letterkenny, Portsalon and Rosapenna Golf Clubs participating in individual, team, club and the dreaded yellowball competitions.

The day was filled with camaraderie and fun competition. Roisin Kerr (Mc Daid) representing the Mc Daid family was on hand to present the overall winning Club and individual prizes.

The organizing committee of Roisin Mc Cormack, Deirdre O Toole, Noreen McConigley and Mary Barrett thanked Nicky for provision of teas/coffees in advance of teeing off and the greenkeepers for the fabulous condition of course, which was echoed by all players, the Ladies branch of the Club and Mc Daid family for their continued sponsorship of the competition.

The Lady Captains from each Club thanked the organizing committee highlighted their enjoyment of the competition and their pleasure at being involved every year.

The winners of the various competitions are as follows:

Yellowball Losers (on 17th) Team 8 – Maeve Ward, Lorna Reynolds and Celia Doran.

Yellowball Winners (33 points) Team 7 – Roisin Mc Cormack, Mary Mc Grath and Brid Mc Menamin

𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝗶𝗿𝗱𝗿𝗲…

Sunday was a busy day with two Portsalon teams in action as Joe Hensey and his squad contested the first leg of their Donegal Seniors final against Bundoran and Cathal Canning's Donegal League team were in semi-final action in Letterkenny.

Perhaps nobody was under more pressure than Deirdre Hensey, as she had to try and watch Joe's side do the business in Portsalon then hot-foot to Letterkenny where sons Kevin and Sean were on opposing teams!

On the positive side, all three Hensey's won their games but Joe's team face an uphill battle in the return leg after Bundoran left Portsalon with 3.5 to 1.5 victory.

In the Donegal Seniors final in Portsalon, the match one pairing of Diarmuid Logue and Philip Durning scrapped their way to a half-point while at the tail end skipper Joe and his partner Paddy Kelly put a full Portsalon point on the board.

Alas, the middle pairings of Brian Devlin & Eunan McGlynn, John Logue & Paddy Merritt and Paul Armstrong & Dan Curran were all defeated despite valiant efforts, ensuring Bundoran will take the advantage into the return leg this Saturday, 5th September.

It is an uphill climb but they will take inspiration from Cathal Canning and his Paddy Carr Donegal League team after they went to Letterkenny on Sunday afternoon and won.

The first leg in Portsalon ended all square with 2.5 matches each and on paper it was certainly advantage to Letterkenny on home soil in Barnhill.

Some stunning golf from Jack Friel and Kevin Hensey in the front match put Portsalon on the front foot. They completed an incredible 8&7 win, with a gross score of eight-under par for the 11 holes they played. Stellar stuff.

Letterkenny responded to win match two as Eamonn McConigley & Alistair Rodger were defeated but Paddy McGowan & Donal Callaghan Jnr controlled the third match and were 2up on the 17th tee when proceedings were called in after a 6&5 win for Ronan McClafferty & Shane McGlade in match five left Letterkenny unable to win on holes, with the match four pairing of Enda McElhinney & Shane
Sandilands all-square through 14 holes.

A superb away-day performance for Cathal and his team, particularly by the front partnership, and they now get the opportunity to face Ballybofey & Stranorlar in the final in their attempt to win a third Donegal League crown on the trot.

𝗟𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗳 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲

Portsalon Golf Club is delighted to look back on a hugely successful six-week Introduction to Golf for Ladies programme, which welcomed an incredible 48 participants eager to take up the game.

The group was privileged to receive four weeks of expert tuition from professional coach Sean Young, whose guidance gave everyone a fantastic grounding in the sport. The programme’s success was also thanks to the wonderful support of club members, who generously volunteered their time and enthusiasm throughout.

The six weeks culminated in a fun mini competition, followed by a presentation evening in the clubhouse, where tea, coffee, and food were kindly provided by Sip and Slice’s Nikki and Amy. A great night was had by all, capping off a memorable programme that has introduced a whole new group of ladies to the game of golf.

A huge thank you to everyone who made this course possible — the club, our volunteers, Sean, and of course, our 48 fantastic new golfers!
