🎯 Want to understand why you hit a fade or a draw?
This simple alignment stick drill is one of the best ways to feel the difference in your swing plane.
⛳ Set an alignment stick in the ground so it matches your club’s lie angle.
⬆️ Swing above the stick → encourages a fade (left-to-right)
⬇️ Swing below the stick → encourages a draw (right-to-left)
This drill is fantastic for developing awareness of your swing plane and understanding how it influences your shot shape.
⚠️ Remember: Swing plane doesn’t create the curve on its own. Your clubface angle relative to your swing path is what determines whether the ball fades or draws. Think of swing plane as setting the stage, while the clubface decides the final result.
Give this drill a go on the range and let me know...

Mullingar Golf Academy
Opening January 2014 ! James Quinlivan here, I have taken over the old driving range in Mullingar and we are open, at long last !! Follow the page for updates.
The new name of the range is Mullingar Golf Academy. We are offering a professional service to the area. We will be giving PGA qualified golf lessons and providing learner and junior programmes. The Academy is located just past the rugby club on the Castlepollard Road and will be well signposted soon.
🔴STOP TOPPING YOUR FAIRWAY WOODS 🔴
There are usually 2 reasons you’re topping it:
1️⃣ Too shallow / in-to-out → catching the top of the ball
2️⃣ Too steep / over-the-top → catching the top of the ball from the other side
The fix: Your angle of attack should sit between -2° and -4°.
Here’s how 👇
✅Take a practice swing and actually brush the grass
✅Feel like you’re sweeping it — even though you’re still hitting slightly down
✅Match that same feeling into your real shot
That’s it. Nail the angle, catch it flush. 💥
⛳️ STOP GUESSING WITH YOUR WEDGES ⛳️
Want to shoot lower scores? Master 12 wedge distances.
🎯 The system:
Take 4 wedges and learn 3 swing lengths with each:
👌Half swing
👌3/4 swing
💪Full swing
That gives you 12 stock yardages you can trust when the pressure is on. 🔥
🌬️ Into the wind or to a back pin?
More club + shorter swing.
⬇️ Lower flight
⬇️ More control
⬇️ More predictable roll
⬇️ Safer shot to back pins
🔑 Setup Keys
Ball in middle of stance
Weight favoring lead side
Turn through to the target
One important note I very rarely hit my wedges full speed

🚨 WANT TO BREAK 80... OR EVEN 70? 👀⛳️
Your driver doesn’t always need to be your longest club... it needs to be your SMARTEST. 💯
🔥 My Fairway Finder setup:
✅ Tee the ball LOWER 📍
✅ Open your stance slightly 👣
✅ Hit DOWN on the ball a touch ⬇️
This gives me:
🚀 Launch angle: 6–7°
☁️ Apex: 50–60 feet
🎯 A penetrating ball flight that finds WAY more fairways.
Now compare that to my normal driver swing:
🏌️♂️ Tee it HIGH
↩️ Right foot back
➡️ Hips forward
📈 Swing up and out to the right to hit my stock draw.
Yes, it carries further... BUT there’s also more room for a big miss. ❌
If you’re serious about shooting lower scores, the Fairway Finder is a game changer on tight tee shots. 🙌
✅ More fairways
✅ Fewer doubles
✅ Takes the left side of the course out of play by reducing the chance of a hook.
Remember... you don’t have to hit it the longest. You just have to hit it from the fairway. 🎯⛳️
💬 Do you have a Fairway Finder shot, or are you swinging for the fences every time? Let me know below! 👇
😬 THE DREADED SHANKS...
If you’ve ever hit one, you know the feeling.
Two common swing faults usually cause it:
➡️ Swing path that’s too in-to-out or too out-to-in
➡️ Early extension
Here’s the drill that helps fix both: The Impact Drill.
🎯 Keep your right foot flat on the ground until after impact.
Simple—but incredibly effective.
✅ Reduces early extension
✅ Improves clubface control through impact
✅ Helps eliminate shanks and tighten your ball striking
Whether you’re battling the shanks or just want more consistency, this is a drill worth adding to your next range session.
Give it a try and let me know what you feel in the comments! 👇⛳️
Want to hit a draw? Build a station for it. 🏌️♂️
A draw needs two things: an in-to-out swing path + a closed clubface. You can’t just “think” your way into that path — you have to feel it.
Set up a simple constraint station:
• Place an object (basket, box, alignment stick) just outside your target line on your backswing side
• The goal: swing in-to-out without hitting the balls
If you swing across the ball or out-to-in, you’ll clip the obstacles. Miss them consistently, and you’re grooving the exact path a draw requires.
Best part — you don’t need fancy gear. Cardboard boxes, headcovers and even range baskets work.
Constraint-based practice like this builds the feel fast, because your body gets instant feedback instead of guessing. Try it and let me know how your ball flight changes. 👇
⛳ Uphill Bunker Shots: Get Your Setup Right
One of the biggest mistakes golfers make on uphill bunker shots is leaning into the slope with a square clubface.
When you do that, the club is more likely to dig into the sand, leading to either a shot that comes out dead or one that jumps and flies much farther than expected.
The fix? Match your body to the slope.
🔑 Key setup points:
• Tilt your upper body back so it matches the angle of the slope.
• This helps the club glide through the sand instead of digging.
• Because the slope adds loft and launches the ball higher, make a slightly longer swing to compensate for the loss of distance.
What to expect:
✅ Higher launch
✅ Softer landing
✅ More consistent bunker shots
Get this setup right, and uphill bunker shots can become a scoring opportunity instead of a recovery shot. 🏌️
