Lower back pain and stress. They're more connected than most people think.

When someone comes to me with lower back issues, the first thing I notice isn't their posture. It's how they hold themselves. There's a kind of bracing. A rigidity. Like they're protecting something. Like if they let go, something will give way.

And in a way, that's exactly what's happening.

The lower back takes an enormous amount of strain when the nervous system is stuck in stress mode. The muscles tighten. The breath gets shallow. The body stays permanently braced. And after a while, the pain becomes so familiar that people stop trusting their own body. They become afraid to relax. Afraid that releasing the tension will make things worse.

So they hold on tighter. Which makes everything worse.

What I try to do is help the body remember it's safe to let go. Slowly. Gently. Not forcing anything. Just creating enough safety that the nervous system can start to unwind.

It doesn't happen overnight. But it does happen.

If your lower back has been talking to you for a while, it might be worth listening to what it's actually saying.

I work with women one-to-one on exactly this. We figure out where the tension is sitting, why it's there, and how to actually help your body let go of it. Not a generic stretch routine. Something built around what your body is doing.

If that sounds like what you need, send me a message with the word "back" and I'll tell you how it works.

If your body won't switch off at night, it usually needs something passive... not another thing to do.

This one asks nothing of you. Soles together, knees wide, hands on your belly, and a slow breath out that's longer than the breath in.

Five minutes before bed. Save it. Do it tonight.

Exhausted but wired is the phrase I hear most.

You're shattered by 9pm... then your head hits the pillow and your mind switches on.

That's your nervous system still scanning, still bracing for the next thing. The humming breath gives it a different signal. The vibration tells your body the day is done and it's safe to rest.

Inhale through the nose, hum on the way out, lips closed. 5 or 6 rounds before bed.

Try it tonight and let me know how you sleep.

Save this. Share it with someone who's always complaining about their shoulders, their back, their jaw. The body keeps the score. And it's usually willing to start letting go the moment you give it permission.

Most of the women I work with recognise themselves in one or two of these straight away. The relief on their face when they realise it's not a character problem is huge. It's just what their nervous system learned to do to keep them safe.

She'd tried magnesium, no screens, lavender, sleep apps, and earlier bedtimes. Nothing worked.

Mum in her forties. Two kids. Busy job. She'd been running on empty for so long she'd forgotten what full felt like. But she didn't come to me saying she was burnt out. She came saying she just wanted to sleep.
Every night, she'd lie there exhausted but wired, brain going at a hundred miles an hour, and she couldn't understand why.
The shift came when she realised it wasn't a sleep problem. It was a nervous system stuck in stress mode. Her body had forgotten how to come down. After years of holding everything together, it didn't feel safe enough to switch off, even when she finally had the chance.
I'll never forget the relief on her face when she understood there was an actual reason for it. That she wasn't broken. That her body was doing exactly what it had been trained to do.
We worked slowly. Breathwork. Gentle movement. Little by little, helping her body remember it was safe to rest.
A few weeks later, she texted me to say she'd slept through the night for the first time in months.
**Call to action:**
If you've been chasing a sleep problem that won't shift no matter what you try, it might not be a sleep problem at all. Send me a message and tell me what's going on for you. Sometimes naming it is the first step.
