A great day for Junior Golf LK, as Harry Burke lifted the Kernaghan Cup at Portsalon Golf Club. 🏆🏌️‍♂️

Harry beat fellow clubmate and friend Oisin Connors on the final green in a thrilling final. There was never more than a hole in it, with Oisin taking an early advantage before Harry clawed it back, leaving them all square as they stood on the 18th tee.

It was nip and tuck all the way on 18, but it was Harry Burke who edged it to claim the cup.

Great play from both lads. 👏🏌️‍♂️👏🏌️‍♂️

Earlier in the day, we also had fellow Junior Golf LK lads Con Boyle and James Davidson competing in the semifinals.

The Shaw Shield for Handicap Juniors U18 was also played for on the day, adding another great dimension to what was a fantastic day of junior golf at Portsalon. 👏🏌️‍♂️

I have no doubt we’ll see Harry and Oisin paired up as teammates in future LK teams. It wasn’t to be this time for Oisin, but he has everything in place for his game to go from strength to strength.

A huge thank you to Eamonn, Stephen, Sean and Oisin at Portsalon Golf Club for hosting and helping make it such a great day for Junior Golf LK. 👏👏

Well done again to Harry, who has worked incredibly hard on his game this year. The hard work gets results! 💪🏆👏

President Ivan Furey’s Junior Presidents Prize

President Ivan Furey hosted his Presidents Prize to Juniors at Letterkenny Golf Club on Monday. Despite the wet weather, the conditions did not dampen the enthusiasm of the juniors, who turned out in great numbers for Ivan’s special day. The course was in excellent shape, with the greenkeepers once again excelling.

The winner of Ivan’s Presidents Prize for Senior Boys was Jonathan Russell. Renowned for his big hitting, Jonathan also had his short game finely tuned, returning a superb score of 38 points off an 8 handicap. Runner-up Charlie Patton shot a 1-over gross for 35 points, with Harry Kelso continuing his fine season in third place and Cian Gildea taking fourth.

In the 18-Hole Non-Handicap competition, Michael Shevlin edged out Harry Burke. In the 9-Hole category, James Davidson clinched victory ahead of Adam Trayers, with the Haran brothers, Sean Óg and Iarlaith, finishing third and fourth respectively.

In the Girls’ Junior competition, Junior Captain Hazel Daly captured Ivan’s Presidents Prize, with her friend Annabell Koentopp finishing runner-up.

The 7-Hole Boys category saw Tom O’Mahoney claim top spot. Marcus Trayers, Dylan Gallagher and Fionn McHugh finished second, third and fourth respectively.

In the 5-Hole Boys category, Eddie Downes finished ahead of his brother Riain, meaning Eddie has the bragging rights for now! Donnacha McConville and Patrick Brennan completed the top four.

Hunters was the place to be afterwards, where the LK Juniors were looked after superbly. The Junior Committee — Elaine, Mary, Gavin and Ian — along with Junior Convenor Seamus, ensured the smooth running of the event. The assistance and support of parents throughout the day was also invaluable.

A special acknowledgement was made to President Ivan for his commitment to Letterkenny Golf Club and for the many roles he has undertaken for the club through the years. All the juniors at Junior Golf LK wished Ivan the very best of luck for his upcoming Adult Presidents Prizes.

A fantastic day was had by all, and a fitting celebration of the Junior section and President Ivan’s contribution to Letterkenny Golf Club.

Lady Captain’s Junior Prize at Letterkenny Golf Club

Lady Captain Mena Breslin hosted her Lady Captain’s Prize to the Juniors at Letterkenny Golf Club on Friday last, with 55 juniors taking part.

The event was held in pleasant sunshine, with the course in mint condition to match. A special mention must go to the greenkeeping team — take a bow!

Lady Captain Mena was delighted with the excellent turnout and was full of praise for the juniors and their golfing abilities.

The overall winner of the Lady Captain’s Prize was Dualtach Herron, who returned a terrific score of 41 points. Dualtach has been working hard on his game, and it is great to see that hard work getting results.

Category Winners

* 18 Hole Non-Handicap: Michael Shevlin
* 9 Hole: Adam Trayers
* 7 Hole: Tom O’Mahony
* 5 Hole Boys: Eddie Downes
* 5 Hole Girls: Lily May Fowley

Once again, Hunters did a fantastic job catering for the dietary needs of the juniors, while the assistance and support provided by parents throughout the event was invaluable.

The Junior Committee continues to provide a busy and enjoyable summer of golf for the Barnhill juniors, with plenty of opportunities for our young golfers to enjoy their game, develop their skills and, most importantly, have fun.

A big well done to all the juniors who took part, and congratulations to all the winners!

Letterkenny Advance to Donegal Youth Matchplay Semi-Finals

Letterkenny Golf Club has progressed to the semi-final of the Donegal Youth Matchplay after overcoming a strong Portsalon side in a closely contested encounter.

Following an impressive 2–1 victory in the first leg at Portsalon, the Letterkenny team travelled into the return fixture with a valuable advantage. With the opening two matches ending all square, Letterkenny had already secured enough holes overall to book their place in the semi-finals.

The match was played in an excellent spirit, with both teams displaying superb sportsmanship and producing birdies aplenty throughout the contests. Credit is due to all the players for the high standard of golf and the manner in which they represented their clubs.

Special mention goes to Eamonn and Stephen, along with the Portsalon juniors, and to Seamus, Elaine, and the Letterkenny juniors, all of whom were a credit to their respective clubs.

Judging by the quality of golf, the sportsmanship on display, and the commitment shown by both teams, junior boys’ golf in Donegal is undoubtedly in very good hands.
