The European Perch . A predatory fish with terribly rough skin, and a huge mouth! Even still its a real beauty ๐ with a striped body, bright red pelvic fins and a dorsal fin with razor sharp spikes that stand on its back like a mohawk, there really is no other fish in our waters quite like it ๐
The instantly recognizable dorsal fin is raised for protection when the fish feels threatened or is chasing food. This little fella was taken on a light soft bait using very light tackle. Caught in Kildare on the Grand Canal close to Digby Bridge .
Last photo is one of the late great John Wilson holding a Perch in his book titled "John Wilson's Course Fishing " published 1992 . John laughed almost every time he caught a fish. I really enjoyed his programme's. RIP John.

๐ฎ๐ช Kayak adventures in Ireland . So much to see when you're on the coast in a Kayak. Simply one of the best ways to spend some time when the weather is calm ๐โจ๏ธ On a clear night like this one , you can sit and count almost every star in the sky. Small bit of wild food foraging too with Po***ck , Sea Cabbage and Native Oyster.
Myself and my brother rowed into Lough Hyne from the sea coming on high tide almost dark, down the rapids (super fun) and saw the bioluminescent algae on the lake when it was dark. (Couldn't get photos, too dark) Enjoyed the clear sky's then rowed back up the rapids and back along the coast to our camp site. Bit of snorkeling, bit of fishing, bit of cave exploring and just taking it all in.
It was an amazing spot at Lough Hyne, such a diverse eco system! I would highly recommend such an adventure ๐ฆ ๐โจ๏ธ
