Jose Baxter — Everton's Boy Wonder - becoming our youngest ever player to start a league match on 23 August 2008, a record that stood until 2026 when it was surpassed by Max Dowman.

Jose Baxter joined Everton at just six years old and came through the academy ranks as one of the most highly-rated talents of his generation. In the summer of 2008, only two months after leaving school, he was taken on the first-team's pre-season tours to Switzerland and the United States.

His moment came on the opening day of the 2008-09 season, 16th August 2008. With Everton hosting Blackburn Rovers at Goodison Park, Baxter came on as a 78th-minute substitute for Nuno Valente to become Everton's youngest ever senior player, aged 16 years and 191 days — breaking the record previously held by teammate James Vaughan.

It wasn't a one-off. Later that month he was named in the starting line-up away to West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns, becoming the youngest player ever to start a game for Everton.

Baxter continued to be involved through 2008-09 and 2009-10, making a number of substitute appearances in the Premier League and featuring in the UEFA Europa League against BATE Borisov at Goodison Park. In March 2009 he was rewarded with a new two-and-a-half-year contract.

In September 2011, to gain regular first-team football, he joined Tranmere Rovers on loan and scored on his debut against Preston North End. The loan was extended several times until January 2012, when he was recalled by Everton.

Still on the fringes of the first team, Baxter turned down a new contract and was released at the end of the 2011-12 season.

Ashley Williams, born on 23rd August 1984

Released by West Bromwich Albion as a teenager, Ashley Williams started his senior career in non-league football with Hednesford Town before turning professional at Stockport County in 2003, where he went on to captain the club.

He initially joined Swansea City on loan in March 2008 and played a key role in their League One title-winning campaign. That summer he made the move permanent for a then club-record fee of £400,000. Williams became a cornerstone of the Swans side, making 352 appearances and scoring 14 goals, helping them win promotion to the Premier League and lifting the Football League Cup in 2013.

In August 2016, he signed for fellow Premier League side Everton on a three-year deal for £12 million. A regular starter in his debut season at Goodison Park, he later fell out of favour and spent the 2018-19 season on loan at Stoke City.

After being released by Everton, Williams joined Bristol City on a short-term contract in August 2019, which was extended that November. He departed at the end of the 2019-20 season and announced his retirement in January 2021, aged 36.

At international level, Williams won 86 caps for Wales, scoring twice, and captained his country to the semi-finals of Euro 2016.

One of the great dual-internationals. One of only a handful of men to represent England at the highest level in both football and cricket.

As a footballer, he was Everton through and through — a right half-back of real class and consistency. 336 games in 12 years for the Blues, right up to the outbreak of the First World War.

He won 4 caps for England: against Scotland in 1906, 1910 and 1912, and against Wales in 1912.

He was also there for two of the great early cup runs — a winner with Everton in the 1906 FA Cup Final at Crystal Palace, and a runner-up in the final a year later in 1907.

Born on August 21 1939 - Frank Wignall, scored 22 goals in 38 matches between 1959 and 1962 playing as the reserve striker.

Wignall signed for Nottingham Forest from Everton in 1963 for, a then club record transfer of, about £20,000.
