For any new followers who don’t know how therapeutic horse riding works, here’s a little insight into how the magic happens. 🐴💚
Therapeutic horse riding is about using the movement, rhythm, warmth and connection of the horse to support a child’s physical, sensory, emotional and neurological development.
Some children have a highly sensitive or overactive nervous system, which can mean that everyday sensory experiences feel overwhelming. When the brain perceives stress, the amygdala — our brain’s alarm system — becomes activated, triggering the release of cortisol and putting the body into a stress response.
When this happens repeatedly, it can make it harder for the child to access the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain involved in emotional regulation, reasoning, planning, attention and social skills.
As the horse walks, its three-dimensional movement naturally moves the rider’s hips and pelvis in a rhythmic pattern that mimics the movement of walking. This rocking, rhythmic movement provides powerful sensory input and can help the nervous system move towards a calmer, more regulated state.
The soothing, rhythmic interaction with the horse promotes the release of oxytocin, which is associated with bonding, safety and reduced stress. This can help counteract the effects of the stress response and reduce amygdala activation.
As the child becomes more regulated, the brain is better able to engage the prefrontal cortex. Repeated positive sensory and movement experiences may also support BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), which plays an important role in brain health, learning and neural connections.
The horse’s movement encourages core strength, balance, coordination, posture, muscle tone and body awareness — while also giving the child opportunities to develop confidence, communication, attention and independence.
So therapeutic horse riding isn’t simply about the horse carrying a child.
It is about using the horse’s unique movement and the relationship between horse and child to provide sensory, physical and emotional input that can support regulation, development and learning💛

I’ve had a super two days completing an Equine Assisted Activities course at ChildVision🐴💛
Their new centre, now called the Jack de Bromhead Centre, is absolutely fabulous — such a beautiful, welcoming and inspiring space🫶.
It was lovely to spend time there and learn more about the amazing work being done.
There is always something new to discover, and when we work with children with additional needs, continuing our education is so important .
The more we learn, the more we can understand, support and provide the best experiences for the children we work with✨✨
A huge thank you to the incredibly knowledgeable Lucy Dillon who facilitated the course🙏

🌟 TY Student Opportunity – Clonalvy Stables Equine Therapy 🌟

We are looking for a kind, reliable Transition Year student who would be interested in helping out at Clonalvy Stables on Wednesdays.
This would be a great opportunity for a student who enjoys working with children, enjoys being around horses and would like to be part of an inclusive environment. 🐴💚
It would also be ideal for a student looking to gain experience and hours towards their Gaisce Award, while developing confidence, responsibility and valuable practical skills.
No previous experience is necessary — just someone who is friendly, dependable and willing to get involved.
If you know a TY or college student who might be interested, please text or call me on 087 2256783 or share this post with them. 😊

We spent the weeekend in Killarney visiting my cousins, while there we walk in Killarney National Park every morning and I want to share this special and beautiful little café in the heart of Killarney National Park ☕️🌳🦌

What makes it even more special is seeing people with Down syndrome being given the opportunity to work there and be part of a team in such a welcoming environment.

It’s wonderful to see inclusion in action — creating opportunities, building confidence and showing that everyone has something valuable to offer. 💚

A gorgeous place with an even more beautiful message behind it. 🌿✨
