Cortisol levels increase naturally in the body during pregnancy. While this is normal, extreme, or prolonged high cortisol is associated with increased anxiety, mental health difficulties, high blood pressure / preeclampsia, birth complications, and some studies show potential long-term effects on the baby.
Some symptoms of extreme cortisol levels during this stage may be recognised as high levels of anxiety, difficulties sleeping (another common pregnancy symptom but more extreme in this case), panic attacks, extreme fatigue, as well as more.
This can be difficult to recognise as pregnancy can be a stressful time and cortisol levels are already raised. It is not something that you need to panic about but by bringing in some simple self care regimens, increasing downtime and proper relaxation, prioritising sleep, practicing yoga and meditation, and looking after your physical and mental health you can help to promote a calmer state in your body and mind and reduce the likelihood of extreme cortisol levels. 🙏🏼✨

Short answer, you can join most pregnancy yoga classes without any experience, but this may depend on the teacher. I always welcome newbies, pregnancy can be a lovely time to start🧘🏻♀️
If you do decide to start yoga during pregnancy I highly recommend going to a specific pregnancy yoga trained teacher. Although there’s lots of videos online I think it’s important to attend at least some in person classes to make sure that your teacher can observe your positioning and alignment for your safety.
It’s also important that you discuss practicing yoga with your doctor before joining a class to make sure there are no contradictions for you. 🙏🏼
