St Michael’s Rowing Club hosted an offshore rowing training event in Dún Laoghaire Harbour on Sunday, bringing together clubs and coastal rowing groups from across the harbour community. The event focused on offshore FISA rowing boats and was led by world champion offshore rower Eskil Borgh.

Eskil shared elite-level coaching with athletes of different backgrounds and experience levels. Offshore rowing is one of the fastest-growing disciplines within World Rowing and is expected to feature more prominently in future Olympic competition formats. The aim is to strengthen links between harbour clubs and introduce more athletes to offshore rowing. Having someone of Eskil Borgh’s calibre coaching in Dún Laoghaire was an incredible experience for everyone involved and sets Dún Laoghaire Harbour as an ideal location to grow the sport of rowing, both in its heritage and modern formats.

On Saturday, 23 August 2025, a historic youth rowing race took place in Dún Laoghaire Harbour! 🛶 We celebrated 150 years of East Coast Skiff tradition during National Heritage Week. Spectators witnessed the race from the Band Stand on the East Pier and cheered on the young rowers from St. Michael’s Rowing Club and Dún Laoghaire Sea Scouts. It’s a great opportunity for our youth rowers and the Dún Laoghaire Sea Scouts to socialise and compete in our local harbour. The winning team from St Michael’s Rowing Club was awarded the O’Connell Centenary Championship Cup. Many thanks to everyone that helped on the day in particular Luca Fennell and Stephen Ring.
It was a unique celebration of Irish maritime history!
