How did royal power shape the emergence of early historic Ireland? Patrick Gleeson's 'Landscapes of kingship in early medieval Ireland AD 400–1150' explores the social organisation underpinning Ireland's early medieval kingdoms.
"The ritual of kingmaking and its varied symbolisms loom large in early Irish literature, and this has, it is argued, distracted scholars from the more functional, perhaps mundane, but vital activities of other kinds of assemblies."
