Can saying you were made redundant in your interview be a red flag?

Having spoken with a few people who were made redundant, that has been their experience. Someone said, "as soon as I mentioned redundancy, the silence became loud"

What should you do then?

No, don't lie.

Instead,

✔️ keep the reason for your departure brief, factual, and positive. Avoid playing the victim or speaking negatively about your previous employer. For example, say:

The business shifted its strategic direction, and my entire department was impacted by the reorganisation

OR

My role was made redundant due to budget cuts and not performance related.

✔️ Immediately shift the focus from your job loss to your achievement. For example, say:

During my time there, I was proud to have [mention 3 achievements,], that relates directly to the role you are interviewing for and show how you can achieve the same for them.

✔️ Then, share what you have been doing since then. For example, say:

While being made redundant was unexpected, it has given me the chance to refocus on my career goals and seek out a role, like this one, that is a perfect match for my experience. I have also dedicated some time to acquire knowledge of AI for Business or mention relevant skills.

✔️ Verbalise your needs or ask for the job:

I am now ready for my next challenge and genuinely excited about the opportunity to bring my skills to (name the company) and contribute to your team/company.

Thank them for their time and keep your head up high.

What was your experience in your job search after a redundancy?

Interview Hacks that helped Ms Bim land her next role:

The TONE of voice.
and
The PACE of delivery.

First, it is important to be yourself.

Now, the hacks:

When speaking with people who are non native to you accent, ensure that:

your tone of voice has the right

↳ rhythm,
↳ pace,
and
↳ pitch,

and

in your pace of delivery:
↳ use pauses for emphasis,
↳ slow down for complex information,
↳ maintain varied speed to maintain engagement,

Naturally a fast speaker but adjusting the tone of voice and pace of delivery are the 2 area of focus I used to coach an Executive to land her next Director role after a redundacy.

One more thing we focused on was hand movement. Too much hand movement in an interview can signal different things:
↳ that you are nervous,
↳ that you are energetic,
↳ that you are dynamic,
↳ that you are aggressive,
depending on where, with whom and culture.

That is why it is important to read the room and adjust accordingly to the rhythm and energg.

Senior roles take much more than skills, experience and qualifications, sometimes, it is

↳ understanding communication in its entirerity: speaking, listening, engaging, presenting, reading the room and much more.

Good news:
↳ coaching can help.
↳ practising on an ongoing basis helps as much.

All the best in your next interview. Most importantly, be yourself.

When you start a new job as a Leader, ask these 3 questions:

1. Why did you hire me?

2. What do you need me to focus on in the next 90 days.

3. What does success look like?

Those questions will help you find alignment and build trust quicker.

All the best.
