Not everything we do at Kizuna looks “traditional” on the surface… but being a well rounded martial artist means understanding movement, pressure, balance, and how to deal with real situations.
Here’s a little warm up drill from Monday night’s training where we worked on sprawls. The warm up is a perfect opportunity to introduce new movements and build them up over time. Sprawls and technical stand ups have become favourites for us.
While you might not immediately associate these drills with karate, there’s a lot of crossover. Timing. Awareness. Reaction. Base. Distance management. All things that exist within karate too.
We use drills like this to help pad out the gaps and give students exposure to different ranges and situations. It also makes training more engaging and fun.
The goal isn’t to turn karate into MMA. The goal is to build capable, confident martial artists with a broader understanding of movement and self defence.
And honestly… sprawling is just good craic too. 🥋♥️
