*The Best Darts Summer League in Dublin — Week 7*
There was a stretch of the Northside last night where you couldn't swing a set of Unicorns without clattering off a scoreboard. Kilmardinny had their Summer Cup on. Astro had their Summer League on. And Whitehall Colmcille GAA Club had the Best Darts Summer League in Dublin on. Two of those three were lovely nights out. The other one was this.
30 players through the door.
A word on your author. Paul Fagan did not show up. Again. Three nights out of seven, three points to his name, 3 weeks left. 3% chance of qualifying for finals night. So the duties fall once more to Paul fAIgan, who has never thrown a dart, has no shoulder to injure, and is always available on a Wednesday.
Also missing: Mossy, off having his tan lines calibrated, and the Lawler brothers, who stayed away on a rumour that Arsenal were in the Aviva and Paulie was waiting on the call to start. He's class, don't ya know. Arteta's phone must be broken. Again.
*Last 32*
Last years champion's defence started nervously: Seona McKeonala got past DoC 2-0, though 65.3 to 63.1 is less Vatican viper, more Vatican garden snake. Dani DiTofano made a very welcome return from a summer of dominating Irish Pitch and Putt and arrived swinging — 85.9 to see off Razor Ennis. Straight down the middle, pin high, tap in.
Dado Migic arrived late, as is tradition, then threw 85.9 to dismiss Aidan Cuffe 2-0. Aido's own scoring system captured every dart of it in perfect detail, which is a thing a man only really appreciates in hindsight. Cheers Dado.
While Aido headed back to the laptop: Joe Byrne saw off Jamie Heavey, Terry Meehan put out Statler Eamonn (Pat watching from the far end of the bar, unable to look), "What" Murphy turned hearing aid off to drown out Eamonn’s heckling and turned Waldorf Pat over, and the Iceman held off a spirited Kyle Keegan 2-1. Adam Coates beat Gary Griffin 2-0 in a match that can be only considered as value for money for darts thrown.
Shock of the round: Killian McCormack 0-2 to AK47. Grecian 2000 doing the business, and the Magic Hands couldn’t pull this rabbit out of the hat.
*Last 16*
PADDY MANN 103.7. Against Joe Byrne. 2-0. Herr Mann threw a hundred plus three-dart average in a Whitehall last 16 on a Wednesday in August, which is not a sentence anyone had drafted in advance. That's not Luke Littler. That's the other lad who dominated Germany.
The 2025 champion is gone — Dani beat Seona 2-1 despite averaging less, 75.6 to 77.4, which is the single most Whitehall thing that happened all night. Birdie.
Terry Meehan dispatched Dado 2-0 at 81.2 (Dado turned into a Dodo), the Iceman froze Taylor Jenkins out with 83.5, Ger Scully hit 83.5 of his own to see off Alan Collins, and Rex Lewis got by Adam Coates. Kevin McGrail edged AK47 2-1 by three tenths of an average point — a photo finish at that altitude.
And Robyn Byrne was on Board 2. Dreaming of Board 4 but threw 75.2 and beat Phil Murphy 2-0 with one arm doing most of the work.
🎯 THE ROLLOVER 🎯
€200 PER TREBLE. Say it out loud. Three darts in the right bed and you walk out of Whitehall Colmcille with SIX HUNDRED EURO. The oooohs went round that room like a Mexican wave. Grown men put their pints down.
The name out of the dip: DAVID O'CONNELL. DoC. WHITEHALL COLMCILLE.
That is SEVEN FROM SEVEN. Seven Rollovers this summer, seven Whitehall Colmcille players. The committee wishes it noted that the tickets are folded by hand, the bag is shaken vigorously, and that this is simply what probability looks like when it's having a laugh. The Bell have questions. Johns 8 have questions. The Kilmardinny and Astro both said they’ll run a non Whitehall rollover is anyone is interested. A man from Swords was overheard using the word "inquiry.”.
Official committee position: no comment, and also how dare you, and also here's your twenty euro.
DoC took his 9 practice darts with the calm of a man who does this for a living, which he doesn't. Ball out of the bag: 16.
Dart one — the Doc's diagnosis was wrong. Sailed into the single 8, a full bed and a half away, and the room made the noise a room makes when €200 evaporates mid-flight.
Dart two — composure regained, and a genuinely lovely dart. Dropped a whisker under the wire into the treble 7. Right line, wrong side of a piece of metal roughly the thickness of a beer mat.
Dart three — followed the second like it was on a rail and nestled in beside it partially deflected into the single 16. We’re sure DoC got excited because he looked ready to celebrate but not to be this day. DoC takes the standard €20 for having a go — about €6.66 a dart, a number that feels appropriate given the state of that first one.
*Last 8*
Paddy Mann 2-0 Dani DiTofano — Dani averaged 75.7 to Herr Mann's 73.3 and still went out, the second man of the night to win the averages and lose the match. This is also where Paddy took out 112, which we'll come back to.
Terry Meehan 2-1 Lewis Ireland — Mighty Blighty out-averaged him and lost anyway. Very Meehan. The Sasanach has now been Radar'd, and there's no appeal process.
Kevin McGrail 2-0 Niall Sheridan — the years rolled back so far you'd want to check a birth cert. Two nights all summer, and he threw like a man who'd been at it every week.
Ger Scully 2-0 Robyn Byrne — the shoulder finally said enough, the average dropped to 54, and Scully Bully was in no mood to be charitable. A quarter final on one wing is a better night than most people in that room had on two.
*Semi Finals*
Terry Meehan 3-2 Paddy Mann. The tie of the night, a deciding leg, and the whole room in around the board. The German's hundred-average heroics had long since drained away, and Terry — quieter and better with every round — simply refused to go home.
Ger Scully 3-1 Kevin McGrail. 73.0 to 61.4. Kevin's tank ran dry at the worst possible moment.
*The Final: TERRY MEEHAN 3-0 GER SCULLY*
Both men averaged 86.7. Identical. To the decimal point. And it finished three-nil.
Ger Scully matched the champion blow for blow across the whole match and could not get a single door open. That is the cruellest scoreline in the history of this competition, and Elsie Tanner herself could not have complained about it any better than Ger did afterwards — with, in fairness, complete justification.
And here's the thing. 173.4 combined is the highest of the entire summer. Misé went back through all seven weeks to check it, and nothing comes close:
Joe Byrne v Anthony Caldwell - 161.6
Killian McCormack v Derek Barry - 168.7
Joe Byrne v Killian McCormack - 141.9
Terry Meehan v Derek Barry - 164.7
Robyn Byrne v Joe Byrne - 159.9
Ger Scully v Cian Fitzpatrick - 163.9
Terry Meehan v Ger Scully - 173.4
Best match of the summer, and it was the final, and both men hit the same number. Week 1's decider was 129.3 combined. We have come a long way.
Terry Meehan finishes five wins from five, 76.8 for the tournament with a first-nine of 87.6. Whatever he was wearing — and reports from Board 3 suggest it was a decision — it worked.
*The Numbers*
11 maximums. Ger Scully hit 3 of them, more than anyone, and went home with nothing but an identical average to the champion. There is no justice.
Highest average (2+ games): Daniele DiTofano, 78.4, with a first-nine of 93.7, best in the building by a distance. Came back for one night, topped the averages, then looked at the rankings and found himself marked Out. Welcome home, Dani.
Next best: Paddy Mann 77.1, Terry Meehan 76.8, Niall Sheridan 75.6.
Tournament average 63.16, with 40 x 140+ and 132 x 100+ — and all 31 matches done in 2 hours 28 minutes. Everyone home and in the bed at a fair hour with work in the morning.
Top 3 matches by combined average: the Final (173.4), Paddy Mann v Joe Byrne (163.9), Dado Migic v Aidan Cuffe (155.8).
💰 HIGH CHECKOUT — PADDY MANN, 112 💰
Herr Mann pockets €60. A hundred-plus average and the checkout money. Somebody find out what he had for his dinner and put the rest of us on it.
Honourable mentions: Kevin McGrail (99 and 91 — throwing checkouts like he'd found a stash of them), Niall Sheridan (83), Joe Byrne (80).
*Rankings — 3 Weeks Left*
Killian McCormack leads on 34 having gone out in the last 32, and he leads by exactly one point from Cian "Mossy" Fitzpatrick on 33 — a man who spent last night on a sun lounger turning himself the colour of a treble 20. Killian's league lead was built entirely out of factor 30 and a jug of sangria. Mossy has played five nights to Killian's seven and still needs one more to be eligible, so there is a very real chance this thing gets decided by a lilo.
Joe Byrne is level on 33 in third, Robyn Byrne fourth on 32 (seven from seven, injured, still climbing), Paddy Mann fifth, Ger Scully sixth and needing one more night.
66 unique players have thrown in this summer.
On the bubble — must play all three remaining Wednesdays: Kyle Keegan, Andy Kennedy, Andy Flood, Paulie Lawler, Philip Talbot, Anthony Mullen and — say it with me — Paul Fagan. Miss one and he can spend Finals Night reading a report written by a laptop about a competition he didn't qualify for.
Another 14 need one or two more nights to lock in. Three Wednesdays left. If you're reading this wondering whether you're in — you're not, and you need to be there next week.
Next Wednesday. 8pm. Whitehall Colmcille GAA Club. Three weeks left, seven men on the bubble, one sunburnt man in second, and a Rollover bag that has some explaining to do.
Slán go fóill, and Paul — the boards are the round things on the wall.
