Athletics Ireland is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Olympian and European Indoor Championship medallist Ciarรกn ร Lionรกird.
Raised outside Macroom in County Cork, Ciarรกnโs exceptional talent was evident from an early age as he claimed national medals with West Muskerry AC, later joining Leevale AC, where he trained under the guidance of Der OโDonovan.
Ciarรกn proudly represented his country on the world stage, reaching the 1500m final at the 2011 World Athletics Championships in Daegu and winning European Indoor bronze over 3000m in Gothenburg in 2013.
Everyone at Athletics Ireland extends their deepest sympathies to Ciarรกnโs family, friends, former teammates, coaches, and all who knew him.
May he rest in peace.

Clever.
Researchers in Switzerland have developed edible water capsules made from seaweed extract, presenting a sustainable alternative to single-use plastic bottles. These biodegradable spheres, roughly the size of a cherry tomato, can be eaten whole, leaving behind no packaging waste at all.
The seaweed-based membrane is completely tasteless, vegan-friendly, and safe for consumption. Early trials have already taken place at marathons, festivals, and concerts, where the capsules showed promise as a replacement for millions of plastic bottles. The same technique could also be used for juices, sports drinks, or even liquid medicines, paving the way for a new approach to portable, waste-free hydration.
Lightweight and environmentally friendly, the capsules naturally break down if discarded, ensuring they cause no harm to ecosystems. This clever yet simple innovation highlights an important truth: addressing plastic pollution doesnโt always require complex technology sometimes, the answer lies in natural materials and creative science.
